Proud to be an Indian!
Reading: Joel 2:21-29
We try our utmost to give to God what belongs to Him. But do we show the same devotion in giving to Caesar what is rightfully his? I think we have let down our country in many ways.
Take for example the way we talk about our country. We degrade our country saying that it is dirty, the people cheat and take bribe, etc. But what have we done to improve the situation at least in a small way? We must influence people for good. Be thankful for the developments in the country.
We must keep our country clean. Start at home. Many ladies care the less for cleanliness at home. Fans, air-conditioners, wall- hangings, windows and doors must be periodically cleaned; keep your neighbourhood clean. Even now I see people travelling in cars throwing out trash. Teach your children cleanliness. Do not evade tax. We claim all benefits but try to hide our money. How will the government run if we do not contribute our mite? Let all your money dealings be through the bank. Let your hands be clean.
When people are dying for want of food we waste so much. Food, water, electricity and paper are like blood for the country. Never throw away food. Water is like gold, save every drop. Repair leaking taps. Don’t allow your overhead tank to overflow. Minimize use of electricity. Avoid plastics. Cooperate with the country’s schemes.
Be involved in some social activity. Help your poor neighbours in some way. You can build toilets for some houses. You can adopt a slum or village and do whatever possible within your means to develop it. See that the children are healthy, educated and well dressed. Some hotel or provision shop or supermarket may be willing to give you their unwanted stuff which may be used for the poor. A Christian lady collects new clothes from a cloth shop which they discard and sends to the poor in the State of Odisha. Have faith and step out. God will open doors for you.
More than anything we should pray for our country and reach out to the people. “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people — for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness” (1 Tim 2:1,2). Then you’ll be proud to be an Indian!
