Before giving the Great Commission, our Lord Jesus groomed His disciples for three and a half years. When the time came for Him to exit the scene, He commanded them to spread their wings. In other words, He wanted them to continue whatever He was so far doing. There are five components in the Great Commission – 1. Go. 2. Preach. 3. Disciple. 4. Baptise. 5. Teach. Jesus went, preached, discipled, baptized, and taught. They had seen Him do all that He was asking them to do. That’s why they did not ask, “How, Lord?” They were well trained for the job by their Teacher and Lord, who was their Model. He gave them practical training also by sending them and hearing of their experiences and giving appropriate corrections. His own vision and mission were lived out through seventy commonplace human beings. If they had one model, we have two – Jesus and the Apostles plus a handbook of guidance to show us the way. So let’s first see the ‘GO.’ How do I go?
1. Go in Obedience.
Obedience means going like Jesus. It is the first step. Jesus went out of His house to the Synagogues, seashore, cities, towns, and villages. Your first requirement is a push to get out of the house. Peruse the Book of Acts to capture the obedience of the disciples to Jesus' commandment. As a discipline, if you study the go’s in this Book, you’ll be astounded. Any page you turn to, the word ‘Go’ jumps into focus. Small wonder the church grew and believers were added to the church every day. If all Christians start going out, churches will start ballooning.
The centurion said, “I am also a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, “Come,” and he comes; and to my servant, “Do this,” and he does it” (Mt 8:9). There was no question of disobedience. Jesus said, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore…” (Mt 28:18,19). We are God’s soldiers, His servants. Can we defy His authority? When your boss asks you to go, will you be staring at the YouTube as if you didn’t hear him? That is exactly how we are treating our Lord if we do not heed His command.
2. Go with Love.
We Christians are very poor in getting to know our neighbours. We don’t love them as we love ourselves. We want to go to heaven but care the least where our neighbours go. We live within the four walls of the Christian community. Our invitees are all Christians. We hesitate to go to non-christian functions (if at all anybody invites us!). “He has gone to be a guest who is a sinner,” was the complaint against Jesus (Lk 19:7). Are you not the physician for sick souls? Your patients are waiting for you to come and heal them. The Jews hated non-Jews and secluded themselves from their presence. The Old Testament Jews wanted the non-Jews to come into their Temple (2 Chr 6:32,33); but the New Testament Jews thought their holy temple would be defiled if non-Jews came in (Acts 21:28).
Expand your circle of friends, especially among the non-christians. Make the first move. A smile will do the trick. Be friendly with them. Be a pal, play host. Many non-christians get so turned off by our mannerisms. Becoming their friend is the first step. So instead of burying yourself into your house like a bandicoot, step out of your house and meet your neighbour. ‘I can’t’ is an alibi. Resist insecurity. You will be surprised how the Lord opens the doors for you. Let your friendship grow. When you come to know of their problems, assure them of your prayers. Later you can share the Good News. Everybody has problems and you have the balm for every aching heart. It may feel a little baffling at first but you will steadily improve.
Then you can go to the nearby hospital during visiting hours with a friend and meet some patients and pray for them. Go to a slum or nearby village. Risking nothing achieves nothing. Break up the fallow ground. Tame the procrastination beast. Plan with a friend and start right away. Heaven is waiting to be filled (Lk 14:23,24).
3. Go with Faith.
The one who goes, shall “doubtless” come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him (Psa 126:6). So keep the positive voice in your head switched on. You may be a one-talent Christian. Don’t hide it, use it (Mt 25:18). Jesus marveled at the unbelief of people (Mk 6:6). Maybe He is marveling at your unbelief and reluctance too. Don’t allow negative thoughts to cloud your venture. Can you say, “God anointed me with the Holy Spirit and with power; but I did not go about doing good and healing all”? (Acts 10:38). God forbid! There are people crying, “Come over and help us” (Acts 16:9). “By FAITH Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out… and he went out” (Heb 11:8). And look, what that faith has accomplished! Is your mind like concrete, thoroughly mixed up and permanently set? Give it in God’s hand to break it and make it pliable. “The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie, deliberate, contrived and dishonest; but the myth, persistent persuasive and unrealistic,” said Mr. John F. Kennedy, former U.S. President. Don’t let the devil spook you into believing the lies he tells you rather than trusting the truth of God.
It was early morning. The disappointed and tired Simon was washing the nets, having caught nothing in the night. There was no catch to take to the early morning fish market. Now here comes this Preacher who knows nothing about fishing and tells him, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” Simon says, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; NEVERTHELESS at your word I will let down the net” (Lk 5:1-7). That is faith. We know the outcome of his obedience. Yes, you are not trained, you are timid, you stammer, you are shy. “NEVERTHELESS” because He said, “Go,” you go in faith. Yes, many times our human intelligence and experience tells us that it will never work. But “nevertheless” because He says so, we must do what he says. Then and only then you’ll witness the miracle.
4. Go with Sacrifice.
Of the three men who wanted to follow Jesus, one wanted to attend an important funeral; another wanted to host a Farewell Party before going and the third one was pretty sure of himself. Jesus highlighted the sacrifice they would be called to make if they decided to follow His nomadic life (Lk 9:57-62). Sacrifice is no more a buzzword today even for disciples keen on going. If your mind is cluttered with inessentials then the way is obstructed. Without giving up what the Lord wants you to give up, you cannot move forward. Jesus did not approve of their excuses to go, rather apprehended them.
Going is an onerous responsibility. The good shepherd trudged up the mountain breathlessly to seek the one lost sheep. He did not stand at the foothills with hands on his hips, wondering whether it was worth the climb in search of one little sheep (Mt 18:12). “My sheep wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill. They were scattered over the whole earth, and no one searched or looked for them” (Eze 34:6). He left the ninety-nine sheep in the “wilderness” and went. He searched “until” he found the lost one (Lk 15:4). “In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish” (Mt 18:14). Yes, sometimes the going gets tough and sometimes we need to leave behind the good sheep to get the straying one. Nothing should discourage us from coming back with the runaway child. We must keep pushing till we find results. Those who return empty-handed are those who gave up too soon. So tough it out. A couple of abortive attempts rarely achieve the goal. Make soulwinning a habit.
Why did the first son refuse to go? He knew work in the vineyard was backbreaking. He was afraid of the scorching sun. But then he decided to brave it. The second one was more than willing but backed out counting the time, energy, and pain he would have to expend. The one who sacrificed did the will of God (Mt 21:28- 31). If you have told your heavenly Father, “I go, Sir,” and still counting the cost, today please repent and go. God is no man’s debtor. He will reward your sacrifice abundantly. Find a friend who will go with you and go out ‘quickly’ into the streets and lanes of the city, the highways and hedges (Lk 14: 21,23).
5. Go with Compassion.
Be a Good Samaritan (Lk 10:30-37). We are surrounded by wounded people eking out a daily living. Their glorious future depends on the Good News that’s sleeping in your bosom. Bring it out and heal the bleeding hearts like Dorcas (Acts 9:36-42). The way to reach the lost is to reach them by the heart. Compassion does cost you something. People in dismal poverty will happily listen to you for the one rupee you give. Take advantage of it. You’ll meet them in heaven as rich guys. Ministry among mendicants is most rewarding. It is also the most easy because they don’t talk back to you. Mother Teresa started with one and it grew exponentially.
“What does love look like? It has the hands to help others. It has the feet to hasten to the poor and needy. It has eyes to see misery and want. It has ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of men. That is what love looks like,” said the saint Augustine. Helping others has mood-boosting benefits. “One of the greatest diseases is to be a nobody to anyone,” said Mother Teresa. Become a somebody to them. Jesus was moved with compassion when He saw the lost (Mt 14:14).
6. Go Boldly.
Jesus said, “I send you out as sheep among wolves… do not fear… do not fear… do not fear” (Mt 10:16,26,28,31). How can sheep go amidst wolves without fear? Yes, they will go if the shepherd comes with them. That’s why Jesus said, “Go… I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” And Matthew says “Amen” to it! (Mt 28:19,20). I say, “Amen.” You say, “Amen” and go. Don’t allow fear to clutch your throat.
In our latest venture, one day men in motorbike confronted us with hate in their eyes and asked us to clear the place. We managed to extricate ourselves from the situation. Though crestfallen, we went to another village. There a teacher opened her house for us and our ministry there grew and flourished. There too one day men blocked our way, abused us verbally, and threatened us with dire consequences the following week. We went with much trepidation but the way was clear for us. Later we came to know that the men were once the teacher’s students. Most people in that area have gone through her hands and once they come to know it is “teacher’s house” they fall silent. It is a miracle God did for us. So expect miracles and do not be fazed by such obstacles. But you must learn to swallow your pride and go. Such experiences only embolden us to a life of going from strength to strength. People have spit hateful words at me but so far no one has spit on my face or slapped on my right cheek.
Moreover, every other Christian will discourage you. Do not decide to do things based on other’s opinions. Believe in yourself though you may stumble and make mistakes along the way. Don’t be intimidated out of trying new things. A partner of Blessing Youth Mission, Bro. Wilson (80) struck upon an idea to request pastors to give him the pulpit for 5 minutes to challenge the congregation. He goes with bundles of Gospel packets. If permitted, he encourages the congregation to take one pack each and give to one non-christian. People rush to take, not one but more than one, at the close of the service. Doors are opening for him to preach and his district is getting flooded with the Good News. It is amazing the way he is making headway. A candle in a corner lights many candles. Forget about globe-trotting ministry. Who can be against us if God is with us? If you are not in the devil’s hit list, you are not active for God.
He who fears will be afraid of the lion which is not there. Many give lame excuses but heart of hearts they know they can make it. They are just too fearful to go. The worst obstacle you confront is yourself. So deal with your devil-given doldrums first. Once the initial hiccups are sorted out you cannot stop yourself.
Working people have great opportunities. They meet many during the commute and can easily open up a conversation with a smile and enquiry. In the hospital or office or wherever you work, if you are friendly with everyone, you’ll find doors opening up everywhere. One of my friends gives a tract to each of his patients.
House visiting can be rewarding, though the task may look daunting. You can go two by two and cover an area. You may go with a gift-wrapped Mark’s Gospel. You will end up with encouraging testimonies. The trick is in not giving up too early. Be persistent. Call 9489866114 for free booklets.
7. Go prayerfully.
The power of prayer cannot be underestimated. It is an armor that protects you. When the authorities threatened the Apostles, “not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus,” their reply was, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.” Then believers, “raised their voice to God with one accord” and prayed. “And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness” (Acts 4:18-31). This passage teaches us that God hears when we call on Him desperately and fills us with the Holy Spirit to embolden us. Those were pre-mobile days and they could call only God and not the DSP. Ask for souls, and God will give you souls; seek the lost and you will find them; knock at closed hearts and they are sure to open up.
Prayer groups must decide on outreaches at least once a week. Never mind the nay-sayers. Just two or three yeah-sayers are enough. Just go somewhere and witness. “Those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word” (Acts 8:4). It will be a long and incredibly hard road, but there will be uplifting episodes. Motivate yourself first and then motivate a small group. Together we can move mountains. Let your prayer always be, “Thy Kingdom come,” not, “My kingdom come.”
Going without prayer is like going to the battle without bullets. You become exposed and vulnerable. By praying, you are getting God on your side. He goes ahead of you and prepares the place. Prayer strengthens you and gives you courage. Jesus told the seventy to pray and go (Lk 10:2). The result – Satan fell like lightning from heaven! (v 18). He taught His disciples to pray, “Your Kingdom come” (Lk 11:2). For God’s Kingdom to be established in the earth, we must pray and work, work and pray. Despite everything, there will always be days when you will want to give up and crawl into a hole in the ground. Never stop winning souls. Come out of your hole and go.
8. Go Equipped and Alert.
Memorize John 3:16 and go. That will cover the entire Good News you have to share. You can also memorize a few other appropriate verses. The gospel of Christ is the power of God to salvation (Rom 1:16). If prayer is the gun, the Gospel is the bullet. You are not to save people. That is God’s job. You are commanded to go and publish the Good News. You do your best and God will do the rest. Have good tracts and booklets. The Gospel of Mark is the best for unbelievers.
For me, there is no set time. Wherever I go, I carry booklets. I don’t hesitate to talk to anyone. Most listen politely and receive the booklet promising to read. Some refuse. I talk to the security standing outside the hotel before we get in or when we exit. You’d miss them if you weren’t looking for them. So be on the alert to spot sitting ducks. I give to those who serve food. If supermarkets are idling, I talk to the staff. Once six sales girls came and knelt down and requested prayer. I explained the Good News and prayed for them. In big stores sometimes staff come rushing from their counters to get a copy. I get permission from institutions to give a Gideon's New Testament to all after a short introduction. Recently in a hospital lift, I gave away the five booklets I had. The next day while going to see my husband who was admitted, I lost my way and went into another corridor. Two girls came rushing and asked, “Were you the one who distributed booklets in the lift yesterday?” When I said. “Yes,” one said, “Thank God, whole night I was worrying if I’d ever see you again. I didn’t get a copy yesterday. I want to know Jesus.” So I shared the Good News and gave the booklet. What an incredible string of coincidences! I have had many such moments of bliss and joy. But faith can be a lonely place making you feel awkward when you are with others and you are the only one doing it. I just don’t care where I am. I give in banks also. It is getting weird in a good way. But I use my common sense and wait for the right opportunity. I share all this not to boast but to encourage you and give you ideas. We go out to do ministry. But we can also do ministry when we go out.
One day I was reading Romans 10:13: “Everyone who calls on the Name of the Lord shall be saved.” It is immediately followed by, “How then can they call on the One they have not believed?” etc, etc. Suddenly it struck me that the Good News is so simple and yet we don’t go out to tell it to others! Don’t let sinners go to hell without hearing the gospel at least once. They will charge you before God. Look, your hands are full of blood. You are guilty if you do not run to save a drowning person. You are committing the sin of omission every day. Go! Jesus has appointed us to go and bear fruit (Jn 15:16). We cannot bear fruit without going. The time to act was yesterday, but it is still not late. You may take a small step of obedience but in due course, it will fill your dark sky with stars. You will forget your sorrows. You will feel like a winner. “He who wins souls is wise” (Prov 11:30) and “Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament, and those who turn many to righteousness like the stars forever and ever” (Dan 12:3). Amen!

John F.
Amen!
