Devan was a village boy. Daily he walked ten kilometers to the next town to attend school. Six boys from his village went to that school. On the way they crossed a railway track every day.
One day Devan noticed that some sleepers were removed from the track. He was worried. Would an accident occur?
He told his friends. They didn’t bother and didn’t want to be late for school. “What if it is not a problem? Will they scold me if I stop the train?” Now he heard the whistle of a train coming and he had no time to think. Luckily that day he was wearing a red shirt. He took off his shirt and waving it ran on the track.
The Engine Driver saw something red and stepped on the brake. The train slowed down and stopped. The driver got down and asked Devan why he stopped the train. Devan took him to the spot and showed him the gap in the track. The driver was shocked. It was the act of Naxalites. The driver hugged Devan. Railway authorities came and inspected the spot. Devan was praised. The authorities wanted to know what he wanted as a gift. “Sir, only a few of us are going to school from our village because we have to walk 10 km. If we have a station in our village more children will go to school. Please arrange for it,” said Devan. The Railway authorities were very happy and complied with his request. The next day Devan’s picture and the news of how Devan prevented an accident and the loss of many lives was in the newspaper. The title was Devan the Great!
Be courageous and act fast in emergencies.
