One of Napoleon’s soldiers was given the duty of guarding a gate with the instruction, strictly not to allow anyone. He stood there faithfully not allowing anyone to pass through the gate. Evening Napoleon came on a horse with two soldiers. Since the soldier had not seen Napoleon, he could not recognize him and hence he did not allow Napoleon in. When Napoleon insisted that he was Napoleon and had to go in, the soldier said: “Even if you are Napoleon you
cannot pass through this gate.” Napoleon turned back and went.
Everyone who heard of this incident thought the soldier would be beheaded. Instead the next day he received a letter of promotion from Napoleon.
