There was once a very rich man and his wife. They had a lovely daughter. The parents taught her to read the Bible and pray. They taught her to respect people and love animals. She grew up into a polite and gracious girl. Unfortunately her mother took ill and died. Seeing his daughter weep bitterly the father thought he should bring another mother for her. So he married a widow with two daughters.
However the new mother ill-treated the girl. She made her work in the kitchen near the cinders and fed her poorly. Thus she came to be known as Cinderella. The wicked mother wanted her own daughters to be well fed and comfortable. Both the girls were unruly and indisciplined. Cinderella cooked and cleaned the kitchen. She loved the birds and their cat and dog. Her father had no voice. But Cinderella read her Bible and prayed everyday and kept her faith in God.
One day there was an announcement in the streets that the King was looking for a beautiful girl for his son, the crown prince. All eligible girls were invited to the palace to dance. The prince would dance with the girls and decide his bride.
The wicked mother was excited. She stitched new dresses for her daughters and dressed them up. Cinderella was very eager to go but she was not allowed. When the girls had left, Cinderella went to the backyard to feed the animals and pray. Suddenly an angel appeared and said, “Cindy, I know you are crying. Don’t weep. Bring a pumpkin.” Cinderella was taken by a pleasant surprise. She ran and brought a pumpkin. The angel transformed it into a beautiful chariot.
Then the angel asked for six rats. When Cinderella called they came running because she loved them and was kind to them. They became white horses. Cinderella’s cat became the coach driver. Cinderella was transformed to a lovely girl with beautiful dress and glass slippers. “Have a good time” said the angel, “but remember one thing. You must be back before midnight.”
So Cindy’s chariot fled. When she entered the Dance Hall many girls were dancing, including her stepsisters. The prince’s eyes fell on her. He was captivated by her charm and grace. He took her hand and started to dance with her.
They danced and danced without looking at the time. Suddenly Cinderella remembered the angel’s instruction. She saw the time and it was one minute to midnight. She left the prince and fled the scene. The prince asked her name and place but she did not stop to answer his questions. As she ran down the steps, one of her glass slippers fell off. She got into the chariot and flew away.
Within a short while she was her old self. The Chariot and horses and chauffeur turned to their old self. The lovely girl was the talk of the town. The prince sent the single glass slipper from house to house to see who matched. None matched. Cindy’s sisters tried hard but not a foot went in. Cindy peeped from behind the curtain. “Come, come, try your luck” said the soldier. Cinderella put her foot in and it was a perfect fit.
The Prince and Cinderella were happily married. Cinderella took her father, stepmother and sisters into the palace and took care of them.
