A convict by name Jean Valjean was released from prison. He wandered around hungrily and knocked at a house. It was the bishop’s house. The bishop invited Jean Valjean lovingly inside the house and served him a hot meal. After chitchat the bishop showed him a warm bedroom and went to sleep.
Jean Valjean could not sleep. He had seen the silver candlesticks on the Bishop’s dining table and thought they might come in handy for his journey. He quietly got up, took the silver candlesticks and walked out of the house.
The police found him with the silver candlesticks and suspected him of theft. They brought him to the bishop’s house. The bishop saw him and exclaimed, “Hello friend.” He then told the police that he had given Jean Valjean the candlesticks as gift.
Whereupon the police left him. Jean Valjean fell at the bishop’s feet and repented of his sins and became a new man.
