Xavier had no job. He asked his pastor to pray for him that he might get a job and promised to give the pastor 10% of his salary for God’s work. The pastor laid his hands on his head and prayed. The next week Xavier got a clerk’s post and was paid Rs. 100 per month. He brought Rs. 10/- to the pastor and went back with his blessing. He worked hard and was soon promoted to Senior Clerk level. He was given Rs. 1000/- month. He was very happy and gave the pastor Rs. 100/-.
Looking at his faithful work the company made him the branch manager and paid him Rs. 10000/- month. Xavier was excited and gave an offering of Rs. 1000/- to the pastor. In a short while he was made the manager for the company in Mumbai for a salary of Rs. 50,000/-. Now Xavier took Rs.5000 in his hand and asked himself, “Can I afford to give Rs.5000 to God? There is school fees to pay and house rent is sky high!” He wanted to break his promise to the pastor.
He went to the pastor and said, “Pastor, it is true I promised to give a tenth of my income. But all the prices have gone up and Mumbai is a costly place. I want to break my deal with God. Can you pray and break it?” The Pastor thought for a minute and said, “The deal cannot be broken. But I can do one thing. I can pray that God will reduce your income.” Needless to say that Xavier was ashamed of himself.
