008 The Bottle Imp

Chingling and Zuchi were husband and wife who lived in China. They were good Christians and went to church. They had two lovely children and they lived a happy contented life.

Misfortune struck them unexpectedly. One day while bathing Chingling found a patch of leprosy on his chest. Those days there was no treatment for leprosy. Chingling was shattered. He wanted to hide it from the family. Whenever he went to the market he started enquiring about the treatment. A native doctor told him that there was no cure for leprosy. However he knew a man who had an imp that could heal him.

Chingling was torn apart. How could he as a Christian go to an imp for healing? Finally he decided that after the healing he would have nothing to do with the imp. So he went to Yongchu, the man who had the imp. He had a very sad face. He made Chingling to sit and said, “Before I give you the imp, I have to explain to you certain things.
1) Once you buy the imp, it has to remain with you till you sell it to another person.
2) The imp can be sold only for a lesser price than you bought.
3) Whoever dies with the imp in possession would surely go to hell. I bought it for five rupees. I earned lot of riches. Now I can sell it only for four rupees to you.” Chingling gave him four rupees and the man brought the imp in a bottle.

Chingling came home and left the bottle in a secret closet.

He went for his bath. What a surprise! The leprosy was gone! But instead of joy, a deep sorrow filled his heart because he would go to hell. Every night he would sit alone with the bottle and cry and put it back in the closet. His wife became very anxious looking at his sorrowful face. One day she saw through the keyhole and everything was clear to her. She asked her husband about it and he confessed to her everything in detail.

Zuchi knew for sure that Chingling would not sell the bottle imp to her. So she devised a plan. She talked to a peddler who came regularly to their house and asked him to buy the bottle for three rupees. She promised him that she would buy it from him for two rupees. The plan worked out well. But now it was her turn to cry. She was tormented day and night by the thought that she would go to
hell. She prayed and prayed and prayed.

One day there was a knock on the door. It was the peddler. He had brought a drunkard with him. “This man wants the bottle,” he said. “Oh no,” cried Zuchi. “If you buy the bottle from me for one rupee then you cannot sell it to anyone. You’ll die with the bottle and go to hell. I will not sell the bottle to you.”

The drunkard said, “I want all the drinks I can drink. How dare you say you will not give the bottle to me? With the imp or without the imp I am going to hell anyway. I want to go there drinking. You give me the bottle imp this very minute.” So saying he thrust a one rupee coin in her hand and snatched the bottle and went away singing.

Don’t have anything to do with evil spirits. It is better to die of a disease in the hands of the Lord than be healed by an evil spirit. There is no joy or peace where there are evil spirits. Nowadays in schools also children play with evil spirits. Don’t have anything to do with it. Hold on to the Lord in happy times or hard times.
