Sylvia was a twenty year old girl. She was very unhappy at home. Her parents’ corrections irked her. She complained about everything — her food, her room, her pocket money — literally everything. She grumbled and cried and locked herself inside her room. Sylvia worked in an office.
Sylvia had a friend in her office. Her name was Nadia. Nadia was a bright girl. She was always smiling and cheerful, having a good word for everyone. Sylvia was surly and rude to everyone. She wondered how Nadia could be so bubbly. Sylvia thought, “She has so little. Why is she so much happier that I am? Everyday I show up at work with an expression that suggests that the universe will soon come to an end. But Nadia on the other hand, always wears a smile on her face, which with her two dimples, makes her look like a carefree angel. Conscientious about her work, she never fools around like I do.”
One day after yet another squabble with her parents,Sylvia packed her suitcase and went to the office. She told Nadia that she wanted to live with her. Nadia nodded and took her home in the evening. Sylvia’s parents were relaxed because they knew where she was going.
Sylvia had her first shock. Nadia’s house was in a slum. There were only two rooms and a kitchen. The toilet was common for the street. Nadia’s grand mother welcomed Sylvia. They had rice, pepper water and beans for dinner. Sylvia remembered the time when she shouted at her mother that the chicken fry was too spicy. She had her mother, father and two brothers. But Nadia lived with her old grandmother.
Nadia gave her cot to Sylvia and shared her grandmother’s cot. Morning, Nadia washed vessels and gazing through the window said, “I like to watch the sunrise from here. I feel life is full of hope when I see the sunlight slowly get brighter and brighter.” Sylvia wondered why she had never noticed the sunrise. Morning they had ragi porridge and left for office. After three days Sylvia decided to shift back to her house. Somehow the voices of her parents didn’t sound so grating. Soon her depression evaporated.
The girl with angelic dimples who had so little, taught her so much. It is all in our mind and it is a matter of attitude. We can be happy with little or miserable with much. Learn to love and appreciate God’s gifts to you.
