How to Escape Adultery

Adultery has been number one tool in the hands of the devil to defeat God’s people. Balaam blessed Israel by compulsion. But he knew their weak point and brought women to defeat them. The curse was turned to a blessing by God! But man turned the blessing to a curse by his sin! “They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the Lord in the Peor incident, so that  a plague struck the Lord’s people” (Num 31:16). The same tool is even sharper today in the hands of the enemy, against God’s people. Let us brace ourselves against the viles of the devil.

If you sin, do not weep that God has let you down. God does not tempt anyone with evil. Do not throw the blame on the devil. He is only minding his own business. Do not get mad at the other person. He or she is just an instrument of the devil. Anyone has ample invitations to taste the glittering cup of adultery. At the same time God has given each one enough grace and common sense. The safety and protection lies in the individual alone. It is up to you to safeguard yourself. Everytime you take one step towards sin, may the Holy Spirit push you back reminding you of the following.

1. Think of God!

“There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God” (Gen 39:9)

“Now Eli was very old; and he heard everything his sons did to all Israel, and how they slept with the women who served at the entrance of the tent of meeting... If one man sins against another, God will judge him. But if a man sins against the Lord who will intercede for him?” (1 Sam  2:22-25)

Also read Rom 1:28; Js 4:4

2. Think of yourself!

“Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body” (1 Cor 6:18).

“Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks sense; He who does so destroys his own soul” (Prov 6:32).

3. Think of your spouse!

“The Lord has been witness between you and the wife of your youth, with whom you have dealt treacherously; yet she is your companion and your wife by convenant... let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth ... He hates divorce” (Mal 2:14-16).

“If my heart has been enticed by a woman, or if I have lurked at my neighbour’s door, then let my wife grind grain for another, and let other men sleep with her” (Job 31:9,10).

4. Think of your party for sin!

“If a man who commits adultery with another man’s wife—  with his neighbour’s wife —both adulterer and the adulteress, shall surely be put to death” (Lev 20:10).

“Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea” (Mt 18:6).

5. Think of the party’s spouse!

“It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife” (Mk 6:18).

“Abstain from sexual immorality; ... no one should take advantage of and defraud his brother in this matter (1 Thess 4:3-6).

“Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks sense... For jealousy arouses a husband’s fury and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge. He will not accept any compensation; he will rufuse a bribe, however great it is” (Prov 6:32-35).

Read also SS 8:6,7.

6. Think of the children!

“Indeed everyone who quotes proverbs will use this proverb against you: ‘Like mother, like daughter!’ You are a true  daughter of your mother, who despised her husband and  her children” (Ezek 16:44,45).

“Your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms” (Num 14:33).

Also read Rev 2:23.

7. Think of the family!

“The Lord plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife” (Gen 12:17).

“The Lord had kept all the women in Abimelech’s house- hold from conceiving because of Sarah, Abram’s wife” (Gen 20:18).

8. Think of the shame and remorse!

“Immoral woman ... and you mourn at the end of your life, when your flesh and your body are consumed, and say: How I have hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof! I have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined my ear to those who instructed me! I was on the verge of total ruin, in the assembly of God’s people” (Prov 5:11-14).

“Whoever commits adultery ... wounds and dishonour he will get, and his shame will not be wiped away” (Prov 6:32,33).

9. Think of your church!

“It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: a man is sleeping with his father’s wife!...Do you not know that a little yeast leavens the whole lump?” (1 Cor 5:1-6)

“No, my sons! For it is not a good report that I hear. You make the Lord’s people transgress” (1 Sam 2:24).

10. Think of God’s Kingdom!

“Phinehas went after the man of Israel into the tent and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stopped among the children of Israel And those who died in the plague were twenty-four thousand” (Num 25:8,9).

11. Think of the non-christians!

“You who say, ‘Do not commit adultery,’ do you commit adultery? ... for the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you” (Rom 2:22,24).

12.Think of the enemies of the Gospel!

“Nathan said to David ... by doing this you have shown utter contempt for the Lord and occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme” (2 Sam 12:13,14).

13. Think of your ministry!

“Then she lulled him to sleep on her knees, and called for a man and had him shave off the seven locks of his head. Then she began to torment him, and his strength left him. ... He ... said: ‘I will go out as before, at other times and shake myself free!’ But he did not know that the Lord had departed from him” (Judge 16:19,20).

“No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize (1 Cor 9:27).

14. Think of God’s judgment!

“Marriage is honourable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will Judge” (Heb 13:4).

“And I will judge you as women who break wedlock or shed blood are judged; I will bring blood upon you in fury and jealousy” (Ezek 16:38).

Read also Rev 2:21,22

15. Think of eternity!

“ .. adultery, fornication, uncleanness, licentiousness ... those who practice such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God” (Gal 5:19-21).

“Sexually immoral ... shall have their part in the lake which  burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death” (Rev 21:8; 22:15).

16. Finally, think of the future glory if you overcome!

“These are the ones who did not defile themselves with women, for they are virgins. These are the ones who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These were redeemed from among men, being firstfruits to God and to the Lamb!” (Rev 14:4).
