Praying before a Programme
“OUR FATHER, we thank You because You deemed us worthy to be Your children. You are the only One to whom we can open up. You alone understand us perfectly. Therefore we have no reservations with You. You have opened up this door of ministry to us and so we go basking in Your tender loving care. As a father carries his child in his bosom, so carry us, 0 Father, and bring us back.
“Our Father WHO IS IN HEAVEN, You are on the throne having full control over everything. So we pray that You give us a favourable climate. The heart of every person is in Your hand. Touch each heart and speak to everyone. Open their eyes of understanding that they may receive Your Word joyfully and with faith. Let everyone’s need be fulfilled, questions answered and faith boosted. Give us a compassionate heart like that of Your dear Son. Even though our self-doubts creep to the surface, because You are high up in heaven, we go lifting up our eyes to You from whom our help comes. Anoint us and endue us that we may speak Your Word forthrightly. Give us the utterance. Give us enough wit to speak well and enough judgment to keep quiet.
“Father, HALLOWED BE YOUR NAME through us. Let our every word and move emanate Your purity. Please, Father, keep us from saying or doing anything that will bring dishonour to Your name. Sanctify us that we may sanctify Your Name. Keep us from speaking or acting on impulse.
“O Father, remove all wrong motives and attitudes from us. Let our only desire be that YOUR KINGDOM COME where we go to preach. Let us not ever desire to build our own empires or be selfish to expand our own ministry. Remove our narrow-mindedness and enlarge our hearts. Help us to build up in some way other ministries and ministers for the establishment of Your Kingdom in that place. Our ministry should prepare people for the second coming of Your Son. They all must come under His Kingship. Help us to work toward this focus. Help us overcome jealousy and rejoice when somebody does better than us.
“Father, YOUR WILL BE DONE. Erase our self-will. In Heaven nobody talks back to You or questions Your will. Your will is obeyed absolutely, happily. Please help us to know Your exact will. Leave us not in confusion. Light it up in neon so we may be sure before doing anything. Help us to accept Your will gladly without reluctance, laying aside our will. We long for You to certify of us, “These are My children in whom I am really pleased.”
Jesus taught us to talk to His Father.The more we talk to Him the closer we get to Him.
“Do what seems best to You with the people. Let us not push them as per our plan and purpose. If we find ourselves not equipped to perform the task that You intend to do among the people, give us the grace to call for the help of other workers. Let us not be afraid of losing our popularity by doing that. Let us not fear that someone else will be honoured in our stead. We are a body and all honour belongs to You. “If Your will alone be done, no doubt the place will be transformed to a little heaven. Let us not be “success” oriented but rather, “Your will” oriented.
“Father, GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD. Speak to us today as we read Your Word. Help us not to neglect our quiet hour in the excitement of the programme. Reveal Yourself in a fresh way. Help us Father to learn from You regularly and teach people what You teach us. Father, people over-feed, over-care and over-treat us. Help us to control our appetites that we may not over-eat and become dull. Let us not be addicted to rich food, drinks and comforts.
“Please, Father, FORGIVE US OUR TRESPASSES AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO TRESPASS AGAINST US. Remember we are dust. You are a great God and who are we before You? In spite of our best efforts we trespass the line You draw for us. But Your mercy lasts forever. We commit our organs to your care. Yet before we realize, we exaggerate, lie, boast. Forgive us. Keep us from sinking into despair when we make a mistake. Help us face discouragements and failures stoically; refuse to be undone; not to blame others for our failures nor condemn a place as “hard soil.” No soil is too hard for You.
“Help us not to be ashamed when we have to reverse wrong decision; to listen to criticism, acknowledge our failure and correct us. Don’t let us ever think we have a halo around our heads. Make us allergic to pretension. Give us the courage to confess, “We don’t know,” when people ask us questions beyond our knowledge. Break us. Keep us broken all the time. Warn us before we fall. Teach us to recognise Your warning. Don’t be hard on us Father when we trespass. We cannot bear if You punish us according to our sins. Deal with us gently because we are like asses. Keep us under the umbrella of Your Holy Spirit and prevent us from making grave errors on the pulpit. Help us to pay attention to our enemies, for they are the first to discover our mistakes.
“Heavenly Father, LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION. The devil is out there to tempt us; but we pray that You will open our eyes to see the escape door You show us.
“Keep us from meditating about our performance, rather let us set our mind on You. Let us not be looking for admirers and devotees but gain adherents and disciples for You.
“Father, protect us from the lust to be the centre of attraction. We try to quell the inner voice that keeps telling us we are great. But we know it is still there—volume reduced! Keep us from the seductive pleasures of soloing and help us realise that together we win. Widen our peripheral vision to see our fellow ministers. Save us from the longing to outshine everyone but give chances to others to win. Help us identify the talents of even the smallest, tap their hidden abilities, and help them come out of their shell. Let us take it upon our shoulders to push them forward and lift them higher. Please keep us from putting down their spirit by berating, instead correct with love and understanding. Open our mouths to praise the accomplishments of our coworkers. Keep us from the overwhelming desire to do everything, rather trust others with responsibilities. Give us the acumen to see what we can drop, share or delegate.
When our coworkers make a mistake, help us not to aul them but safeguard them from others. Release us from the craving to straighten out everybody’s ffairs. Keep us from the sin of partiality and bias. Teach us to treat our fellow-ministers with respect and not to raise ourselves above them. Let us not abuse pulpits to thrust our fancy doctrines or lampoon people. Teach us pulpit manners. Keep us from quoting someone’s confidential matter.
“Father God, remove communal, racial and linguistic feelings, and denominationalism that may lurk in our hearts when we face a mixed congregation. Keep us flexible. Help us to minister regardless of the offering. Take our minds off the money and keep it on ministry. Help us to present the truth and truth only and not promise a false paradise to people.
“Heavenly Father, help us not to despise little children; for You interview their angels constantly. Let us see them as those owning Your Kingdom and less them. Help us to see them as souls as valuable as the adults (if not more!). Enable us to minister to small numbers with the same enthusiasm as with big numbers. Mould us not to feel inferior if a socalled lesser ministry is committed to us. If we are ignored, help us to accept it. You never ignore us, we know. If our talents are not recongnised and used, keep us patient and trusting; because we know You would reward us as if we used them. Help us to understand that it requires more spirituality to accept a situation when our talents are purposely ignored than to use them. When we are sidelined, help us to be joyful. Help us to brush aside insults and keep us from the urge to strike back.
“Help us not to whine about the food, stay and travel arrangements; to bear all inconveniences for the sake of the gospel. Let us be always genial and never irritable. Remind us of the prophets and Paul who went through untold misery for Christ’s sake. Before them we are grasshoppers. Enable us to preserve our purity when we stay in homes and to be a blessing to them. Help us shed materialmindedness and shopping sprees while in new places.
Any money is Your money. Help us to be honest in accounting. Let us not be expecting gifts. Help us not to treat people according to their gifts.
“And please Father, DELIVER US FROM EVIL. Keep us safe from accidents, dangers, robbers and diseases. Deliver us from the bugbear of opposition to the gospel. We believe it is a fine thing to die for what we believe in. Give us timely wisdom and make us bold as lions. Help us display coolness and aplomb in an emergency. Let Your fire temper us like steel into a sharp-edged weapon. Help us to love our enemies, bless those who curse us, do good to those who hate us and pray for those who spitefully use us and persecute us. Let them bring out the best in us, not the worst.
“Father, we have prayed this prayer because YOURS IS THE KINGDOM, THE POWER AND THE GLORY!
“You are King, we Your servants. Don’t let us fall into the trap of thinking we have done something great; but to heart of hearts realize we have just done our duty.
“We cannot help people by our melodramatic behaviour, gimmicks, shouting, bombastic language or even laying on of hands. Unless You manifest Your power through us, people will go away empty. Have pity on the people and send Your power.
“Help us never touch Your glory. It is Yours and Yours alone FOREVER AND EVER. What right do we have to secretly rejoice in what You accomplish through us? As we touch the finishline of our ministry we will only fall prostrate with gratitude.
“Finally Father, let us enjoy the ministry and return home rejoicing!
“In Jesus’ Name we pray, Amen.”
