Fear Not! Why is the Bible punctuated with “Fear not”s? It is because fear is an integral part of man. Though, when God created man He said all creatures would fear man yet man looks at everything with trepidation. In this world we live our life with a myriad fears. It is our best friend and worst enemy. We are lampooned by fear of sickness, pain, people, exams, joblessness, poverty, robbers, natural calamities, curses, evil eye, enemies, future, demons, witchcraft, Second Coming, old age, a new venture, accident, death and a whole lot of other things — which give us premature grey hairs. We seem to be constantly rankled by fears. The Newspaper adds fuel to the fire. Fear is a very natural emotion given by God to safeguard us. Even the most courageous have panic creeping all over them at times. If we know what to fear and what not to fear, we can handle our fears expertly. God says, “Do not fear what THEY fear, and do not dread it. The Lord Almighty is the One you are to regard as holy. He is the One you are to fear, He is the One you are to dread”(Isa 8:12,13). Who is this “THEY”? They are the ungodly people who do not fear God. They have no promises, no assurances and no base not to fear. Their faces are a crisscross of wrinkles running from everywhere to everywhere. “Only when we are no longer afraid do we begin to live.” — Dorothy Thompson. Those who fear God are assured of safety. The ungodly are intimidated by everything and fret for their safety. Actually the fear of death keeps us from living, not from dying. The godly rest relaxed. It is rightly said that those who fear God don’t need to fear anything but those who don’t fear God will fear everything. The courageous dies only once but the coward dies a thousand deaths. Who is this courageous person? The Bible points him out as the righteous man. “The wicked flee when no man pursues but the righteous are as bold as the lion” (Prov 28:1). Do you know that God has you in the palms of His hands? If so, your hands need not go clammy with sweat. Read Isaiah 49:16 which goes like this: “See, I have engraved you on the palms of My hands.” He is the greatest palmist. Now and then He checks our condition to see if any hair has fallen off our head, the way we check Facebook. Nothing can happen to us without His knowledge. Whatever is happening to us is happening to us because He has permitted it. Tough it out. Yet, there are a few things that give us the creeps — 1. Sin — Leads to fear (Gen 3:10; Dt 28:66,67). 2. Violating laws — Leads to fear of authorities (Rom 13:4). 3. Unproductive careless life — Leads to fear of future (Prov 31:21). So rid yourselves of all sin, walk by the rule and lead a busy productive life. It is better to live every day and die than die every day and live. We know David as a great warrior. But there were times when his blood froze. Having come through many such experiences, He writes, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death. I will fear no evil.” The reason he states is, “...for You are with me” (Psa 23:4). “Fearless” is living in spite of those things that scare you to death, says Taylor Swift. Words of Comfort are just a shelf-search away for those who live in fear. If you take in the “Fear not”s in the Scriptures as a cat laps up milk, your heart will be warmed and comforted and you will rest fearlessly in the bosom of the Father. Medical research has not developed a pill for fear. It is only the presence and knowledge of God that can dispel fear. We need to fear God, our parents and bosses, but this is not terror, rather a reverential fear. The Bible gives us invaluable advice: “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand... For I am the Lord your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, ‘Do not fear,’I will help you” (Isa 41:10,13). When the disciples were scared out of their senses by the storm, they woke up Jesus. Jesus asked them a question that put them to shame. If you are scared of anything, ask yourself the same question, “Where is my faith?” The Jesus who saw them to the shore safely is the same yesterday, today and forever. Learn the art of staying calm and unruffled even when circumstances rattle you. Have courage. Every day is exciting with that kind of spirit. Courage is the fear extinguisher and they say, “Fear, rightly used is the father of courage.” The doctor checks my Blood Pressure and says it’s going up. It gives me a queasy stomach. I tell myself, “Fear not.” My grandchild is sick. It terrifies me. I tell myself, “Fear not.” It works like magic. Beloved, Fear Not!
