Why I Believe The Bible

Bible, the Book of books, has been my textbook since the age of thirteen.  What did make me fall in love with this Book?  Have I not mastered it after 62 years of reading?  Why do I continue to love it, cherish it and believe it?  Because, I found in the Bible something which I have not found in any other book I have come across, something unique!  Though I cannot explain in one write-up, “Why I believe the Bible,” I will attempt to put the reasons in a capsule.

1.  It’s a Book for all age groups.

The Bible is the one Book which is patiently read by the mother to her preschool child. The heroic stories thrill the child; the heavenly laws mould the child; and the divine truths lead the child to the Almighty. For any young man or young woman, it is a light for the path and a lamp to the feet.  It guides the youth in the safe paths of this unsafe world.  It allays their anxieties and brushes away their fears.  What of the old man?  Why does he droop over it under the lamp-shade with his failing eyesight?  Because it is the hope of his future.

The Bible is one Book written for the young and the old.  The books of the world are of two classes.  Those read by the young are not enjoyed by the old and vice-versa.   But the Bible spans both age groups.  The young read and understand it; the old analyse and rejoice in it.

Yes, the Bible is a Book for all age groups.

2.  It’s a Book for all times.

The Bible was in writing for more than 2000 years, yet it’s laws still hold good for today.  A wide range of writers belonging to different eras have authored the books of the Bible, yet its books do not contradict one another.  There is no second edition of the Bible.  It is an unchanging Book.  Whereas many of the books in the world need to be updated to suit the new generation and changing values.  Galileo discovered that the world was a globe, a few hundred years ago, but the Bible stated it 2000 years ago (Isa 40:22).  Books  become outdated but the Bible is always up-to-date.  Blood circulation was discovered not long ago but the Bible beautifully pictures the human body and blood circulation in the Book of Ecclesiastes (12:4-7).

Scientists change their laws.  Mathematicians revise their formulae.  Governments change their rules.  Kings confess their faults.  But no need has ever so far risen to change a letter or word or sentence of the Bible.  The Bible has not bowed down to acknowledge any defect.  What it was 2000 years ago, it is the same today. What it spoke truthfully 2000 year ago,  it shouts aloud the same today triumphantly.

Yes, the Bible is a Book for all times!

3.  It’s a Book for all groups.

The Bible was written by uneducated fishermen like Peter as well as gigantic scholars like Moses and Paul.   Today to our astonishment we find even a fisherman understands the masterly writings of Paul and a philosophical scholar is enlightened by the simple writings of Peter.  Is this mystery?  No, this is history!  History proclaims the claims of the Bible that it is for the Greek and the barbarian, for the wise and the unwise.  The Jews were converted by it, the Greeks sought after it and the nations fought for it.  Today the villager buys a copy of the Bible for his home while it still holds its place as a literary masterpiece for literature students.  It is the largest bestseller till today - the unchallenged monarch of books.

Yes, the Bible is the Book for all groups!

4.  It’s a Book for all seasons.

When I am sad, it makes me smile; when I am dull, it boosts me up; when I doubt, it feeds my faith; when I fear, it gives me courage.  I need it for my joys; I need it for my sorrows; I need it when I am a failure; I need  it when I succeed. It is read in marriages, it is read in funerals; it is read in churches, homes, functions and prisons.  Tell me a place where the Bible is out of context.  It suits all occasions and meets the need of every person.  It answers all questions and solves all problems.  It is a light in darkness and a haven in storms.  It chides me, corrects me, criticises me and shows myself to me.  It makes me cry, it makes me laugh; it hits me hard, it pats me soft;  I need it in the daytime, I need it in the night.

Yes, the Bible is a Book for all seasons!

5.  It’s a Book which never grows old.

Though written years and years ago it still maintains a freshness and a fragrance.  Scholars have studied it, doctors have dissected it, students have sweated over it and its enemies have poured over it.  Yet the fathoms of the book have eluded  all and it remains inexhaustible.   Essays, books, commentaries, dictionaries and volumes have been written on the Bible.  Yet it is supremely majestic in that, there yet remains so much to be written about it.  No man has mastered it in his lifetime.   When I was a child, it told me stories.  When I grew up, it grew up with me and taught me more things.  In middle age I discovered something new and interesting in it.  Now in old age, it is my constant companion; encouraging me and sustaining me.  I continue to search for hidden treasures in it.  It has not lost its novelty and sweetness after my seventy years of usage!  Daily I long for it more.  The books of the world are for a reading.  But the Bible is forever.  Kings and rulers have tried to destroy it from the face of the earth.  But it has survived the tides of time.

Yes, the Bible is a Book which never grows old.

6. It’s a Book which changed my life.

I was in a desperate search for reality, peace and joy.  No book could satisfy me.  People failed in their attempts to dry my tears.  The world offered me no hope.  Darkness and despair filled my soul.  Finally it was the Bible, the Word of God, which shed its rays of hope and initiated a transformation in my life.  It’s a Book which lives, talks and guides.  It saved my soul and healed my wounds.  It freed me from the fetters of sin to which I was a slave, and gave me victory in areas of defeat and shame.  It has released me from the fear of death and it promised me Eternal Life.

Yes, the Bible is THE Book which changed my life!

And this is why I believe the Bible!
