50 Ways to Love the Poor

1. Learn to smile at the poor. Talk to them with respect and love.

2. Ask their names and enquire about their family, house, etc. Visit their abode.

3. Take extra food packets for the poor while journeying.

4. Take some old and new clothes while travelling by car. In all likelihood you’ll meet some poor on the way.

5. Lend cheerfully to the helpless.

6. Enquire about government schemes for widows, women, old people, girl children, and about bank loans and get them sanctioned for the poor.

7. Learn about leprosy homes, old people homes, orphanages, homes for the mentally retarded, deaf and dumb, and handicapped, blind school, etc., and help the poor for admission. Visit some of these institutions regularly and offer help.

8. Educate poor students by paying their fees.

9. Take free tutions for poor students. Teach the illiterate to read and write. You can even start regular classes for the young and old in slums.

10. Adopt children in the age group of 2-12 and nurture them for God. Even those who have children can adopt.

11. Run a destitute home.

12. Pay a visit to Mother Theresa’s home for the poor in Calcutta. Visit the nearest centre of the Missionaries of Charity and offer whatever help possible.

13. Visit government hospitals and meet with patients. See if they are properly treated. If not, meet the doctors and discuss with them. Give toys to very sick children in the paediatric ward.

14. Take the poor to the doctor for treatment.

15. Arrange marriages for widows and poor girls.

16. Adopt a very poor family in your neighbourhood and bring them up in life.

17. Fight the causes and cases of the poor, for example when their land is encroached.

18. Conduct a gospel programme for beggars atleast once a year and give them a good meal.

20. Make or buy plenty of sweets and savouries during festivals and give to all the poor who visit you.

21. Conduct a short Sunday Service for the beggars sitting outside the church waiting for alms.

22. Take a poor family out for a holiday.

23. Dedicate some of your garden products for the poor.

24. Ransack lofts, trunks, suitcases, almirahs, shelves and give away things you have not used for more than a year.

25. Go singing Christmas carols in slums and give greeting cards and sweets to the downtrodden people.

26. Buy and keep a stock of little little toys or things which you can give to poor children when you come across them.

27. Stop swapping gifts with the rich and divert the money to the poor.

28. Help build toilets for slum-dwellers.

29. Set apart a tenth of your income and property for the poor

30. Designate money or property in your will to an institution that cares for the poor.

31. Designate all the coins that come to your hand for the poor.

32. Keep a maximum of 10 good dresses and 10 ordinary ones for you and give away the rest to the needy.

33. Don’t bargain with poor vendors.

34. If you receive wedding gifts in multiples don’t exchange them in the shop. Give away the extra for the less fortunate. Don’t store them up for your children and grandchildren.

35. Cut the habit of reserving your child’s clothes for the next child. Let the next child enjoy new clothes.

36. Distribute your old books to the poor.

37. Conduct musical programmes in beggars hangouts.

38. Prepare food packets and distribute them in beggars abode.

39. Build huts for the homeless.

40. Repair the collapsing houses of the poor.

41. Visit the helpless. Clean up their home and cook a meal for them.

42. If giving of alms daily disturbs your work, teach them to come first of every month or every first Sunday. Then you can teach, give alms, pray and send them.

43. Lead a simple lifestyle so you can spend for the poor.

44. Conduct games and sports for slum children. Buy shuttlecock, football, carrom board, chess board, etc., for the poor to play. Fix a swing and may be a few other such things for them.

45. If you are a doctor, settle down in tribal areas or villages and uplift the people in as many ways as you know using your knowledge and training.

46. Visit the homes of the poor and be a friend to them. Attend their marriages, funerals and other celebrations.

47. Take time to patiently listen to their tales of woe.

48. Don’t repair your footwear or old dresses and use them. Repair and give them to the poor for a few months of enjoyment.

49. Stop when you see someone lying on the roadside. Check if he is alive. If dead notify the municipality for burial. If alive help appropriately.

50. Don’t feel obliged to eat all that guests bring or neighbours send to you. You can share them to your health!
