Happy Lean Year!

There is no dearth for articles and books on dieting. Yet they are all sucked by the public like water on parched ground. If you have tried many methods to slim down and failed, then give this method a try.

Overweight people tend to believe a false body message : “I eat minimum yet I don’t lose weight. That means I got it from my family and there is no use trying to reduce.” Other myths they believe are that they put on weight because they fasted too much, or had a caesarean section or sterilisation

operation or attained menopause, etc. It is true that there are genetic and other factors to obesity. But interestingly these factors are never found in poor families! Without doubt, our wealth has become our enemy. If many or all in a family are fat, it can also point to wrong diet and eating habits in the family. The weight gain in normal pregnancy is 8-10 kg.

The first trick in weight reduction is to view it from the spiritual angle. This gives us a fighting spirit and perseverance. We look to God for help. Look at it this way : The Bible flickers red light not to eat more than what we need. It is the sin of gluttony. We are not to keep company with gluttons, may be to avoid developing the same habit (Prov 23:20). One Bible verse that warned me very strongly not to overeat any single meal was Luke 21:34, “Take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, so that day come upon you unawares.”

If I am overweight, I am eating more than my requirement and therefore I need to pray and get over this sin (not bad habit ! ) of overeating. God is interested in disciplining me and He will help me if I cooperate with Him. If others lose weight easily and l don’t, God expects a tougher discipline in me than in others, in this area. When I submit myself to His discipline I will reap the rewards. If not I will suffer for my indiscipline.

God is not pleased when we destroy our body which is the temple of the Holy Spirit. We won’t die before God's appointed time, but I believe we can kill ourselves before time. Eli might have got up from his fall and lived to intercede for Israel, if he had not been obese (1 Sam 4:18). Gluttony is slow suicide. Can you imagine Jesus to be a fat and flabby person? His self-control and hard work are to be emulated. To be like Jesus we should imitate Him in these aspects too. Dieting may be the cross that God is asking us to take up “daily” and follow Him. Will you turn away like the rich young ruler ? (Mk 10:21).

Start with prayer. Pray every day and at every meal. Don’t pray for your weight to go down miraculously but that the Lord should enable you to control your appetite and help you to eat the right food, at the right time, in the right quantity.

Don’t rush in to diet before taking some pre-diet measures. The first step is to buy a weighing   machine. It is not as costly as you imagine. Many starve, look at the mirror, despair and give up. The mirror or once-a-month weighing is misleading. To keep you going enthusiastically, you need daily encouragement, especially if you belong to the resistant type.

Weigh yourself daily before breakfast. Eat normally and check your weight daily for a week. If you increase, that means you are eating more than necessary and need to cut down your food or increase your exercise. If you maintain your weight you are eating right, but that is not enough to bring down your extra kilos.

Observe if you are hungry when you sit for a meal. If you are not, that shows you have overeaten the previous meal. So make your meals smaller and smaller till you become hungry for the next meal.

For the time being you’ll be wise to forget about fasting. Don’t feel guilty about it. You are now taking up a more rigorous discipline than fasting. God will be more pleased if you learn self-control than if you fast and go on a binge. Many believe fasting makes one fat. But the truth is, we usually eat sumptuous pre-fast and post-fast meals that make up for more than the foregone meal. Once your weight is down and steady you’ll be able to fast.

The principle is the same when you eat one or two meals a day, managing the rest of the time with coffee or tea. One can eat more than a day’s requirement in one hearty meal. When you eat one meal a day, you end up stuffing more calories than necessary for twentyfour hours. “Eat, drink, because tomorrow we die-t ” doesn’t work out right.

Most of us fatsos don’t know how much food we require for a day. We believe we eat little when we may be actually eating more. It varies according to each person’s daily work and Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). The weighing machine is the correct indicator to tell you whether you are eating more or less or just enough.

To cut on food, cut on sweets and unhealthy fats (icecream, soft drinks, milk sweets, fries, oil, ghee, chocolates, fatty non-vegetarian dishes, etc.). Rice and potatoes are fatfree and nourishing, if taken in the right quantity. Use a sugar substitute. Add a good amount of pulses and beans to your diet. Always remember that weight is not an indicator of your blood cholesterol or sugar level. Don’t starve yourself when you see some niceties. Take a small bite and keep it in your mouth for sometime instead of gobbling it up. If you aretempted to take another bite, tell yourself, “Even if I eat a whole piece the taste will vanish the moment I swallow it, and I’ll regret eating it.” If your palate itches in between meals, throw in a raisin and tell him to wait a little longer.

By cutting down on fats and sugars, you’ll reduce in a healthy way. You won’t suffer the side effects of dieting. In addition if you take plenty of water, fruits and vegetables, your body’s water, vitamin and mineral supplies will be met and you’ll become hungry for the next meal. It is a good idea to take a quality multivitamin tablet, one every day. Occasionally if you go partying forget about dieting and have a good meal. But don’t overload yourself to the extent of feeling uncomfortable. Become strict from the next day onwards. If you are visiting new places for more than a day, you cannot afford to relax on your diet.

You may “feel” starved. But this is only a temporary phase. As long as you are obese you will not be able to eat much. But once you are down to normal you can eat three decent meals a day.

Think of ways to increase your exercise, either aerobics or a walk of not less than three to five kilometers a day (for a normal person). Or spend your energy profitably by taking up some chores at home like gardening, marketing, etc. Simple exercises like discarding the table and chair or cot for a mat, getting up to do what you have forgotten instead of postponing it, have double benefit and become habits of lasting value. Check if you are oversleeping and if necessary cut your siesta. Very few realise going to bed early is part of the slimming down process. Ten to twelve midnight are not active hours. The same shifted to morning five to seven can become very active hours. Most do not exercise for want of time. Early risers have the advantage.

Reducing weight by dieting takes away fat and muscle from your body. But reducing by exercise takes away fat and strengthens the muscles. So wisely combine both. For youth exercise is the better method. Youth who are very thin, who desire an attractive physique, should resort to body building exercises rather than to unhealthy eating.

Without knowing and understanding the above facts fully well, to start dieting is like floundering in a whirlpool in a rudderless boat. You go round and round (sorry, up and down) and finally sink.

Now you are ready to go on a diet. Have your full size photograph taken in standing position and paste it in your diary or mirror. Tell yourself that you are going to look a lot better than that by the end of the year.

Fix your target. If you are 5 feet your weight ought to be 50 kg. For every inch over that add 2 kilos. (5'1" - 52 kg; 5'2" - 54 kg). One or two kilos this side or that doesn’t really matter. Now you know your goal. Draw a graph as shown below, with your weight and month and stick it in a convenient corner. Mark your weight every month.

Your plan is to reduce just 6 kg this year. Hurry not to reduce. Those who are in a hurry to reduce keep hurrying for many years without reducing. They are only keen on reducing, never bothering to learn to keep the discarded kilos off. By reducing gradually you learn to maintain your weight without strain.

There are two ways of reducing. The first method is ideal. Make dinner a standard two chappatis (or equal amount of rice or whatever) and a non-fatty curry with a salad and fruit. Let your breakfast, lunch and tea be as usual. Observe this for a few days. If you start losing weight, good. If not, then start cutting down on your evening snacks. Have only a cup of tea. If you are still not losing after a week, it is time to start working on your lunch. Cut down the rice a bit and increase vegetable and fruit intake. In all likelihood you'll start losing by now. If not, finally it is time to touch your breakfast. If you are tempted by any dish in between meals, put it off to be eaten with your next meal.

Let’s say you start with 76 kg and by mid January touch 75.5 kg. The more important thing is to see that your weight doesn’t go up from 75.5 kg the rest of the month. Take it up as a challenge to keep off the ½ kg at any cost the whole month. Don’t reduce more than ½ kg per month. If you are successful you have learnt a valuable lesson in self-control and climbed one step higher spiritually. Thank God and give a thankoffering and vow never to exceed 75.5 mark in your lifetime. By any chance if it goes up, bring it down at the earliest.

Now you are ready to start February. Throw off another ½ kg. Let’s hope and wish you start with 75 kg in March. Honour the Lord with a thankoffering. You can’t go back on what you have thanked the Lord for. Now come down to 74.5. If you drop down to 73.5 it is better to bring it up to 74.5. This is more helpful in the longer run and spares you the giddiness that accompanies rapid reduction. You may jump up to 75.5 also. Don’t worry. Bring it down. you may see-saw up and down for sometime. Whenever you see-up keep saw-ing down. This may continue for weeks, months or even years. But the 75-80 swing will become 70-75, then 65- 70 and then 60-65. When you are 50 years old you'll be happy you learnt to keep your weight down. You’ll love to see yourself in the mirror and be out of your inferiority complex. Moreover you would have put off arthritis, high blood pressure, heart attack and perhaps diabetes too. You’ll be enthusiastic to stand in a group photo instead of trying to hide half of you behind someone.

By April you’ll be 74. Won’t you dance to have lost 2 kg and kept it off ? At any time if you feel exhausted or weak (unlikely), stop reducing. Don’t overeat and go up. Eat, checking your weight so as to maintain and not go up. Rest for a day or two and your weakness will disappear. You can even go on with the same weight for a month or two till your body learns to live in the new weight. Then start again.

By December you touch the bottom of the graph. Keep it up! (No, no, keep it down). Though the roller coaster ride was terrible and made you scream at times, in the end when you are down and steady you give a hearty laugh and exclaim it was worth the trouble.

The second method is skipping your dinner. Though this is not generally advised, I preferred it for the sheer thrill of running to the scale in the morning and finding myself minus ½ kg! You may be resistant for sometime. But if you don’t over-eat your lunch or snacks, your weight does go down in a day or two. If you adopt this method you may find yourself hungry and unable to sleep. Think of what you’ll do if you are fasting. In Bible times (and even now) people fasted for three days without food or water. So think that you are fasting and humbling yourself before God to achieve control over your appetite. Use the wakeful hours profitably. But take care not to over-eat your breakfast. The stomach takes atleast half an hour to realise that it is full. So stop with your usual breakfast though you may not “feel” full.

There is good reason for celebration when you have shed 6 kg, not only because you are a lot smarter now physically, but also you have grown spiritually a foot taller. You have pleased God by submitting to His discipline. You have learnt hard lessons on self-control, a fruit of the Spirit. Self-discipline in one area helps you achieve control in other areas. It may take years to find out how much exercise and food you need per day. If you don’t give up in the middle you’ll achieve the balance sooner or later. If we are sincere, God helps us as much as He helps us overcome any other sin.

Gratefully have another photograph taken for your new diary (if you have to reduce more).

It was after I finished my school final at the age of sixteen that I noticed my weight going up. We are a fat family and as children we always had too much to eat. With some restriction in food my weight came down. But after child birth I was a sickly 72 kg for my 5'3" stature. I developed arthritis of the knees. My husband was like the Pharoah’s cow. He could eat all the fish in the river, come out and swallow a full fat cow and continue to be slim. I was jealous of him but accepted my limitations.

I knew God was chiding me but I turned a deaf ear to His warning. One day I ate 12 laddus (sweet balls) at a sitting. I started itching all over and found that I tested positive for sugar. I cried. I was 28 years then. I confessed my sin to God. I felt l was at the doorstep of my grave. I started cutting down on my sugar and calorie intake and started exercising vigorously, including exercises for the knee. I became slim again and after eight long years the sugar disappeared one fine morning.

I praised the Lord for the miracle. Gradually I relaxed and regained five kilos. I ate sweets and junk and less worthy food and tried to reduce weight. Whenever I touched 62 I would go into severe hypoglycaemic blackouts, my blood sugar dropping down to 64-68 mg % (70-120 being normal).

Then I would discontinue dieting. Since my mother had the same problem I believed I inherited it from her and almost gave up.

But God was still concerned about me. I consulted a dietician and she advised me to stop taking sugar completely as it stimulates insulin production in the body. I took it seriously and cut back on my sugar intake by 90%. Whenever I craved for sweets I would take a limited quantity of natural sugar like sugarcane, sweet potato or honey or put a dry fruit in my mouth. For a year there was no noticeable difference. I was in and out of hypoglycaemia. Then a miracle happened. My weight touched 60 without the return of hypoglycaemia.

What touched me most in the journey to temperance is that when I was sincere, God helped me through various means and in the process taught me valuable lessons. He was like a tough daddy, handling the rod when necessary to teach me discipline. Today (1999) at 53 I am happy I am free of arthritis, diabetes and hypoglycaemia which plagued me once. I am glad I didn’t give up. Once I starved myself. Today I enjoy three good meals a day and maintain an all time low of 60 kg since five years.

A final word: It is never too late to start. It is a matter of decision, discipline and determination. If you trust God and trust yourself, you can enjoy a Happy Lean Year !
