Woman or Demon?

“Red and yellow, attractive fellow” sang Selvasekar’s friends in a welcoming gesture as he put the stand of his red bike, then his yellow jacket over his shoulders and walked towards them. He was sure an attractive fellow—six feet high with a lock of black hair falling across his forehead making him look all the more handsome.

Dei, just the right girl for you has joined first year da.”

Anand announced as Selvasekar joined them.

“I don’t care a hoot. A flick on the cheek should bring blood. That’s the kind girl I’m looking for.” This is Selvasekar’s reply.

“Wait for just 15 minutes. She’ll be out of the classroom now.”

Sekar was chatting without getting excited. The bell went off. All the heads of the five member team turned towards the classroom. The first year engineering students ambled out in animated conversation.

“Look, look, here she comes. The one in the peacock colour salwar.”

Sekar casually turned around. He could not take his eyes off her. Lyla came walking gracefully like a moon draped in salwar.

Sekar’s mind quickly calculated. He was pretty sure she will fall for him. He being in the final year, even if he marries her next year, when he goes for P.G. she can continue her course. The question of children can be pushed off to a later date. There’s no bindi in her forehead, that’s enough. He can convince his parents.

“He’s Rajan’s sister da,” piped in Gurunath, breaking Sekar’s reveries.

Selvasekar started getting close to his classmate Rajan, and to visit his house now and then. Any opportunity to talk to Lyla was embraced. She was turning heads in college making people wonder if she was Ishwarya Rai’s sister. When she opened her mouth one was reminded of Latha Mangeshkar. Honey dripped in her voice. ‘How sweet, how gracious’ were Sekar’s constant thoughts.

Parents’ doubts were cleared expertly. Cupid struck and then love blossomed.

One day ... in Rajan’s house ... Sekar and Rajan were seated in the hall engrossed in serious

conversation. Lyla was not aware of Sekar’s presence. Sekar’s eyes were flitting towards the inner door awaiting Lyla’s exit. The maid took in two cups of tea for her and her mother. Next minute...

Like a torrent, abusive words from Lyla’s mouth flew out through the door and hit Sekar’s ears like bullets.

“Stupid, don’t you have any sense? Can’t you be a little careful? Silly ass, you have spoiled my beautiful dress.” More words which cannot be written in this book flowed fluently from Lyla’s mouth with ample suppliments from her mother. The maid exited, wiping her eyes as one very much used to verbal abuse. What foul words he had not heard in his house in the past five years, Sekar heard in five minutes. This was something strange for Sekar who had been trained to talk to housemaids with utmost respect. Is she a woman or demon he doubted. Some of the senseless questions his parents bored him with suddenly made sense. “What’s happening son? You were rushing headlong towards marriage and suddenly you have become so quiet?” mummy asked.

“What’s the hurry now mama? We have all the time in the whole world. Take your own time to find my rib.” Parents looked at each other thoroughly confused!
