Do you have a Backbone?
Backbone is the thermometer of one’s strength and courage. If you do not care for this body part tomorrow you may become backboneless.
During your youthful years bones grow very fast. You need plenty of calcium for that. So drink a glass of milk everyday and eat plenty of vegetables and greens.
Our posture affects our backbone greatly. When you are in the sitting position see that your shoulders are straight and not slouched. If you bend your backbone to crouch on the table leaning on your elbow you are in for trouble. Even when you stand, stand straight on both legs, and walk like a soldier. Never stand on one leg like a rag doll.
Don’t read lying on the floor or cot. It is healthy to sleep on a mat spread on the floor. Or use a steel or wooden cot with a heavy sheet on it. If that also is too difficult use thin cotton mattress. A lax fibre cot or a thick dunlop pillow are not good for your backbone.
Would you like to test the health of your backbone? Keep your feet together. Now, without bending your knees try to touch the floor. Stand up. Note something behind at your hip level. Now, bend back and try to see that spot. Next you stand with feet one foot apart. Spread your hands. Note the spot your right hand points to.Without moving your feet rotate your body to the left and try to see the spot. Try the other side. If you can do these your backbone seems to be OK.
If you cannot, don’t be alarmed. If you can do these excercises fifteen times a day you will improve. You can do it even at the age of 60. Swimming strengthens your back muscles which support your backbone. Doing hard household chores that require bending forward, backward and sideways are good for your backbone.
Do you have a backbone? When everyone hesitates to do what is right you must boldly step forward to do it. The righteous are bold as the lion.
We cannot change the world. But we can change our neighbourhood. If all of us transform our neighbourhood, the world will change a little bit! And that needs a backbone!
