Have you failed?

Has your failure driven you to conclude that life is over for you? God looks at it differently. The world may conclude that you are useless. God doesn’t. Who decided that 40% is success and 39% is failure? Is it not man? That’s the standard according to man. God’s measures are different.

Jesus Christ judges man’s success another way. He told a story. A master gave one of his servants five talents, to another two, to another one and took up a long journey. When he came back and settled accounts he found that the one to whom he had given five had earned another five. The two talent fellow also had earned another two. But since the one talent man had buried his and failed to earn another one, he was dumped as an useless fellow and punished severely.

Those who earned five and two were rewarded equally: “Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord” (Mt 25:21). The five talent servant did not get more, neither did the two talent servant less. If the one talent servant had brought in just another one he would have received the same. But he failed to do it.

If the five talent man had earned only four he was neither good nor faithful. Even today many five talent students who can easily bag 90% are smug to get 70% and happy that they passed in first class. The world praises them. The one talent weak students who can get only 25% may work hard to get 30% yet dumped as ‘good-for-nothing.’ But when our Lord comes, they will be acclaimed, “Good and faithful servants.”

For God, neither your pass nor your first class means anything. He looks if you have put forth your best efforts.

If you have worked heart and soul then don’t worry. Don’t consider yourself a failure. Don’t let your teacher, friends or parents put down your spirit.

Winston Churchill, though a school dropout, became the Prime Minister of England. Many times, the reason for our discouragement is not because we have failed,  but because we have failed to see our successes. Where you succeed and experience joy there you concentrate and nurture your talents.

“You see your calling brothers, that not many wise according to the flesh...are called. But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise” (1 Cor 1:26,27).

God gives you a promise: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Cor 12:9).

Life is ups and downs, winter and summer. What is important is to face life courageously whatever may come. Double your efforts. Not only your academicity, develop your other talents as well. As much as success helps you, failure also helps to mold you. We learn more from our dips than from our ups. The simple secret is to identify the talents hibernating in us and use them. We should not be fragile like glass. We should be like Salem steel! Jesus is coming soon to crown you. He has given you talents, “according to your own ability” (Mt 25:15). You will receive the same reward as the muti-talented one. Our Lord loves you very much. The world has double standards. It loves the one who has plenty of talents and gives step-motherly treatment to the one talented. But for God all are equal yet he demands you to work hard according to the ability He has given you.

Rejoice, you are not a failure!
