Marry Mary?
Miss Mary is pregnant. Her mother is rolling on the floor crying.
Dad: Mary, you have put us to shame.
Mary: Dad, I told you.
Dad: Nonsense. Who are you trying to fool? I have told you umpteen number of times not to be praying or meditating so much. That’s why these crazy dreams. And you use it as a cloak to cover your sin. Don’t act superspiritual.
Mary: But dad, it wasn’t a dream. It was a vision. Mom, please stop yelling at me. I feel like vomiting and I need your help.
Mom: Why should I suffer for what you did?
Dad: We can’t unscramble an egg. Now let’s hurry up with the wedding before Joseph comes to know about it.
Mary: No. It is not right to cheat him.
Dad: You mean, we should tell Joseph?
Mary: Ya, let him know.
Dad: Have you lost your head Mary? We can’t tell him about your vision or dream or whatever. We can only tell him the truth.
Mary: That’s fine with me.
Dad: You think any level-headed man will marry you after knowing the truth?
Mary: Well, if this is from the Lord, then nobody can stop it. Not even Joe. Dad, I fell in love with God before I fell in love with Joe.
Dad: Why don’t you go and tell the chief priests, scribes and elders? They will dance with delight for the Messiah to be born.
Mary: Stop poking me, dad. I’ll go to aunt Elizabeth. She’ll be able to tell me what is what. I am all confused now.
Dad: Go, get lost!

Heli: Joe, are you crazy? You want to a marry a pregnant girl? Forget it boy. We’ll find a nice girl for you.
Joe: No dad. God has clearly told me that this is by the Holy Spirit.
Heli: Who’s going to believe you? They’l1 think you are responsible for the pregnancy and that’s why you married her in haste. You can’t stop the wagging tongues. You need some courage to put her away, son.
Joe: Dad, I am not a kid. I just can’t let her suffer for what she has not done. Moreover I love God more than I love her and I can to face the shame for His name.
Heli: Bull-head. Do as you please. But for heaven’s sake don’t come to us if you land up in problems later on.
Joe: No dad. We serve a good God. If I don’t marry her as early as possible she’ll be stoned and we’ll be defeating God’s purposes.

And so Miss Mary and Mr. Joseph were united in holy matrimony in a quiet homely function.
There’s a lot of difference between modern love stories and the one that happened 2000 years ago.
Today a boy loves a girl (or vise versa) the way he loves an ice cream. He enjoys eating it up. That’s selfish destructive love. Its focus is sensual pleasure at the cost of the other, with God nowhere in the picture. In saying, ‘Yes’ to Gabriel, Mary took a tremendous risk. Her marriage was at stake. But she was ready to sacrifice her love for Joseph to fit into God’s plan. God had always been number one in her life. As for Joseph, his dream of marrying a young girl was shattered. He married a mother. But he had sold himself to God and his top priority was fulfilling God’s will at any cost, even in his marriage. Whoever thought they were walking hand in hand towards the first Christmas!
Whoever thought they were to be the greatest lovers of all time who brought to the world the greatest gift! Dear young people, is your love affair a selfish one satisfying just yourself or does God stand supreme in the decisions you take at every step towards your marriage? What has your love to offer this world?
