Perhaps your parents are contemplating marriage for you. It is rather disturbing to a girl when parents talk in a low tone and hush-up as she enters the room. Photos are presented, questions asked, problems discussed, strangers coming and going – these send your mind a-reeling. Many girls are moved from tears to madness in this process. But with some modern girls, it’s different. They are driving their parents to tears and madness by their strange movements, excuses for coming home late, hanging on to the mobile, secret letters, etc. Well, whatever the case my be let us see what light the Scriptures throw on this important youth issue of choosing the life partner.
You must first of all sit at God’s feet to find out His will concerning you. Now you ask, “How am I to find the will of God? Will the Bible tell me whom I should marry?” Three things together reveal the will of God to us. They are –
Let’s see these in detail.
The Word of God is the will of God. The Bible is the final authority. God’s Word never changes and if we follow its precepts, we will never feel sorry. David says, “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path” (Psa 119:105). The passage for immediate reference here is 2 Corinthians 6:14-16. “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers.” Two necks are tied together in the yoke to carry equal burden and they move ‘together’ towards a ‘single’ destination. A believer cannot pull along with one who has not himself come under the yoke of Jesus. Some quote 1 Cor 7:14 to support unequal yoke. But remember, Paul here speaks to the already-married and not the unmarried. If the person is not a believer (Just a “good” Christian is not sufficient.), the matter can be totally dropped then and there. Don’t lose God’s best for you in a hurry.
Next comes the Guidance of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit in us guides us in all matters, but He does it always only in accordance with the written Word of God. He never contradicts it. Wait on God to know if the person proposed to you, provided he is a believer, is God’s choice for you. He has given us the spirit of “sound mind” and if we are found in His will, we will be at perfect peace. You need not decide on what a ‘prophet’ says to you on this matter. GOD cares for you. He has promised to keep His eyes upon you to guide you. If there is a revelation to you or someone, judge whether it is in keeping with the Word of God. The Spirit of God confirms what is explicitly revealed in the Word of God.
Circumstantial evidence is the third index in finding out the will of God. God who rules the circumstances will make doors open when the plain teaching of the Word of God, attested by the inner voice of Holy Spirit, is obeyed. God will cause the circumstances to work out the problem. DO NOT go by circumstances alone. Many have missed here and lost the fire of God in their souls, when they decided considering the circumstances alone. Even if at times the circumstances may seem unfavourable when you have obeyed the Word of God, WAIT patiently and the Mighty One shall break down even brazen walls to make you the way. “Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him and He will do this” (Psa 37:5).
