Samson threw a party for thirty young men during his wedding. It ended in a disaster and broke his marriage too (Judg 14:10-20). "You have spent enough time in the past...living in lewdness, lust, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties and detestable idolatry. ..The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear-minded, and self-controlled and be watchful in prayer" (1 Peter 4:3-7). The Roman and Greek cultures were known for wild parties. These pagan festivals often resulted in sexual orgies. But God delivered many from such practices. So the Apostle warns them about slipping into them again.
Two girls used to come to me for prayer and counseling. They worked in a small company for a paltry sum. The company held a party and these girls were invited. After going there they were shocked to see what was happening. They realized it was a wild party and excused themselves and came back. That was forty years ago. How much worse it would be today! Wild parties are becoming more and more common, not only in cities, but also in rural areas. Young people are drawn into it. Many youngsters think it is just fun. They do not realize the dangers that await them there. At fi rst it is excitement; then it escalates to heights that take them to such levels that they do not know what they are doing. They totally lose control of themselves. They fall under the power of the prevailing atmosphere there. It was in one such moment in his birthday party that Herod made a rash promise, that came back to haunt him (Mt 14: 6,7).
Drinks are usually served in such parties. Youth believe they can stop when they want to, but put too much confi dence in their self-control. Just one more and just one more till you are out of control. These drinks may be laced with drugs that can knock you off and you are too excited to resist anything. Girls get raped. Some who have become pregnant do not even know how it happened.
Beware my children! The Bible calls orgies as an act of sinful nature (Gal 5:19-21). Orgies means unrestrained indulgence, especially sexual excesses. Youth often get angry with parents who do not allow them to take part in late night parties, for good reasons. With all good decisions you may go, but you must never risk a place where your decisions will crumble down to nothing. When you are back to your senses, you will feel sorry for whatever happened.
The Bible has given us sufficient warning to avoid such excesses. Now it is pervading every culture. The warning in Galatians 5:19-21 ends like this, "Those who live like this will not inherit the Kingdom of God." Once you experience a wild party, you may be tempted to go, again and again. So avoid the fi rst taste itself.
Can you imagine a godly person like Aaron throwing "a feast to the Lord" and allowing people to go naked and unrestrained? So the people rose in the morning, off ered burnt off erings and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play (Ex 32:5,6,25). Do you see godliness and paganism running into each other here? Even Christmas parties can go wild. Beware! Anybody can err in any situation. So in these days of moral decay keep yourself off any suspicious invitation. Listen to your parents though it may break your heart.
Having parties is not totally wrong. Have it in a home in the presence of responsible parents or guardians so that the risk of going overboard will be restricted. They need not join your party but their very presence in the house will be a deterrent to excess. Strictly keep drugs and intoxicating drinks out. Laugh, joke, play, drink Pepsi and have fun but let everything be done decently and in order. The prodigal’s father had a party in honor of his son. Parents want you to be happy with your friends but they are also careful for your safety. Do not go beyond eleven so that all can be back at home before midnight.
Some of the mistakes you do in life are reversible but some are not. Be careful lest you regret forever.
