Sylvia and her friend Dora were artists who lived in an upstairs room. Sylvia took ill with pneumonia and was bedridden. Those days there were no antibiotics to cure pneumonia. The doctor advised soup and rest. Dora attended to her constantly.
Sylvia would watch an ivy plant climbing on a wall through her window. It was autumn and the leaves of the creeper were falling. Only four leaves remained. Sylvia became very ill. She would tell Dora, “When the fourth leaf falls I will be gone.” “Don’t talk like that,” Dora would chide her. One leaf fell and three remained.
Another artist lived in the ground floor. He came to visit Sylvia. “When the last leaf falls, I will be gone,” said Sylvia. “Nonsense,” said the artist. “It is foolish to be pessimistic.” That night another leaf fell off. Two more remained.
There was a storm in the night and one more leaf fell off. Just one remained. Sylvia became very weak. That night it rained. “Morning the leaf will be gone and I will be gone,” said Sylvia. But morning the leaf was there. Sylvia asked for soup. “I think I will live. The leaf has not fallen,” said she. Dora brought her soup and nursed her back to health.
Sylvia walked up to the creeper to see the leaf that resisted the storm and the wind and the rain. Behold, there was no leaf but a leaf painted on the wall. She turned around to see Arthur the artist, standing near his window with a mischievous smile!
Keep your mind healthy and you will be healthy.
