It was Diwali. Children had five days leave. Uncle Sam had promised to take them all on a short tour for a day. Children were excited and were waiting for uncle Sam. The van arrived at gun time and children clambered in. “Uncle, where uncle? Are we going to the park?” asked Vinod. “Please tell us uncle, are we going for a children’s film?” Uncle Sam was quietly smiling. “Wait,” was all he said.
After 45 minutes drive the van stopped in front of a compound gate. Children were surprised. Uncle Sam unloaded parcels of snacks and new clothes. “Is it for us?” children talked softly among themselves. What they saw inside touched their hearts. There were children without parents, old people with no one to care for, retarded, differently abled and the like. They were lonely with no celebration. They knew uncle Sam and came running to him with broad smiles. Uncle Sam gave a hug to each of them and told the children to distribute the snacks and clothes.
As the children got into the van for their return journey, they were transformed children. “When God has given us much we must share it with those who have nothing,” he told the kids. Each child made a silent decision in his / her heart to give away as much as possible to the unfortunate.
