Supriya read about a fire accident in her town in the newspaper. She took her two children Monish and Dharshini to visit the place. Seven huts were gutted and the victims were salvaging whatever they could.
“How did it happen amma?” Monish asked. “Some children were bursting crackers and a spark fell on one of the houses and the fire spread,” amma explained. “Is it not dangerous? Some may even die,” both of them spoke at a time. “Oh yes, the danger of someone getting burnt is always there,” said amma. “These are poor people and whatever they had is gone. No amma?” asked Dharshini. Amma patiently answered, “Yes, darling. They have lost everything.”
Supriya hugged her two children and said, “We can celebrate festivals without fireworks and crackers. We can make sweets, buy fruits, wear new dresses and have good food. It is safer for us and others. Moreover these send poisons into the air we breathe. So it is best to avoid crackers and fireworks. “Amma, we won’t buy crackers and fireworks for Diwali,” both cried in unison.
