Sivaraman, king of Madurapuri was a gentleman. It was his birthday and learned men from all over the country joined the feast. Then the king gave gifts to all the learned men. One man had come from Kallukottai. “How far is Kallukottai?” The king asked his minister. “100 kilometers, your honor,” said the minister. “Give him 100 gold coins,” ordered the king. The next man got 200 gold coins since he came from a distance of 200 kilometers.
A crafty man, observing all this wanted to get a good sum from the king and so he said, “I came from heaven.” The king asked his minister how far heaven was. The minister replied, “Your honour, once I was attacked by an elephant. I cried, ‘My God, my Lord, save me.’ God heard my prayer and I was miraculously saved. So heaven must be at ear-shot distance.” So the king ordered the man to be given 10 gold coins. The man went home disappointed.
