Nobody knew her name. She was called Narasamma because she was a nurse. Though in the government hospital she worked there were innumerable nurses, ‘Narasamma’ meant only she. Narasamma came out of her house to check where the foul odour came from. The drainage water from her neighbour Kuppan’s house was flowing through her front yard. Kuppan was chewing betel leaves sitting in front of his house. “Kuppa, what is this? Immediately do something. I don’t want this dirty water running in front of my house,” said Narasamma.
Kuppan looked annoyed. “What will you do? Will you put me in jail? Do what you can. You have no frontyard. It is public property.” So saying he started shouting abusive words at her. The shocked Narasamma just walked into her house. She prayed for Kuppan and the situation.
It was past midnight when she heard a knock on her door. She peeped through the window. It was Kuppan. “Narasamma, please do something. My son is having diarrhoea. He is collapsing. Please.” Narasamma called an auto, put the child in her lap and proceeded to G.H. with Kuppan by her side. Staff flew everywhere at the sight of Narasamma. Drip started flowing into the vein of the child. After three days the child was discharged. Kuppan fell at Narasamma’s feet and apologised.
