Alamelu Grandma peeped through her window when she heard noises in the next door locked house. She saw three men with ladder, paint brushes and paint boxes. The house-owner was in Gulf. She thought he was getting the house painted to give it to rent. Around three p.m. one of the men said, “Dei Ranga, there’s an old woman in the next house. There are brass vessels outside her house. They will fetch us a thousand rupees.” “Kabali, careful,” said Rangan. “Jail experience has not straightened you out,” said Muniyan. “Shut up,” said Kabali and jumped into Alamelu’s house and packed a big brass plate in a sack. Evening when she gathered the vessels Alamelu didn’t miss the plate. When the men finished their work and were leaving, Alamelu called them. “Come inside,” she invited them and gave them each a tumbler of kheer. “Today is my husband’s death anniversary and so I made kheer,” she said. “How’s it?” she asked. “Very nice grandma,” they replied.
“Here take these bags. There is a shirt and a dhoti for each of you. Every year I do it.” She handed over a bag to each. The men looked at each other. They thanked Alamelu and left. When Alamelu went inside the house, Kabali returned and slipped the brass plate from where he took and sneaked out. The three were changed men.
