Mahadev Ranade was a great man. Gopala Krishna Gokale had high respect for him but had never seen him.
Once, in a college function, the Governor was to participate. Gokale was given the job of checking each one, if they had the invitation and letting them in.
A prestigious man who came said that he had forgotten to bring the invitation. Gokale refused to let him in, in spite of his repeated requests. Senior people had to come and get him in. When Gokale came to know it was Mahadev Ranade he felt very sorry. He could not meet Mahadev after the event.
After six months Gokale received an invitation from Mahadev. He was very happy that at last he had an opportunity to apologize to Ranade. Ranade received Gokale with a happy face and open hands. He told Gokale that he had decided to make Gokale the secretary for the “Sarva Janic Sabha.” It was a honorable job. Gokale was pleasantly surprised. Gokale apologized for the earlier incident. Ranade replied, “You were dutiful. That’s what I liked about you. That’s why I thought you are the right person for this post.”
Be dutiful. Honour the dutiful.
