Ramani was excited that she was going to spend the summer vacation in a village, in her uncle’s house. For two months no computer games or meddling with a mobile. There would be lot of fun in the village. Ramani and her uncle’s daughter Latha, hit it off right-a-way. They wandered the fields, plucked mangoes, climbed trees and peeped into crow nests and bathed in the pump set water and pond. One day uncle Sundaram took them to fly a kite. It gave them immense pleasure to hold the thread and watch the kite sway this way and that wagging its tail ever so gently. After two hours of enjoyment, uncle tied it to a tree and they all sat under the tree. Ramani said, “Uncle, the poor kite wants to fly higher, uncle. Please cut off the thread and let’s watch it fly high.” “Okay,” said uncle and cut off the thread. The kite wobbled, swagged and gently came down and down and got lost in an unknown destination. “How sad,” thought Ramani.
Uncle told the two girls, “Only if there is some control over your lives you can fly high in life. If there is no control over your life, you are lost in this world. So listen to your parents and obey them.” Ramani made a strong decision to obey her parents even though many times their commands seemed hard.
