Perennial favourite
Reading: Galatians 5:22-26
“Let us not become weary in doing good,
for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people,
especially to those who belong to the family of believers” (Gal 6:9,10)
Mary was a perennial favourite with everyone. The angel said, “Greetings, you are highly favoured” (Lk 1:28). She might have been in her sweet sixteen, I guess. Yet she was not like most teenagers today. She was a loveable character. She was a favourite not only with people but with God too (v30). One more person whom we know as a favourite with people and God was Jesus Christ. He “grew in favour with God and man” (Lk 2:52).
How can one become a favourite with God and people?
1. Hospitality — Abraham found favour with passing people when he welcomed them and gave hospitality. Young girls should first of all sit properly in the drawing room, not putting their feet up on the teapoy or chair. They can sit relaxed but in a proper manner. When guests knock at the door, they should open the door and greet them. They should invite them in and seat them comfortably with a smile, enquiring about their welfare. Then they should serve them water. This will tremendously impress anyone. You do it, not to impress people but to build your own character. See how Elizabeth invited Mary in by loudly and joyously greeting her: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! Why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (Lk 1:42,43). Mary immediately felt comfortable.
2. Helping nature — Joseph found favour with Potiphar (Gen 39:4). He found favour with the prison warden (v21). Joseph was by nature a helpful boy. Joseph was a teenager, a mistreated teenager at that! But his kind nature won him the favour of people. He was very helpful in Potiphar’s house and in the prison too. Potiphar did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate (Gen 39:6). The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care (v23). So much he was helpful and became their favourite.
Wherever you may be, at home or school or college or in somebody’s house, be very helpful and you are sure to become a perennial favourite. Such girls will become God’s favourite!
