A Love Letter
Reading: 2 John
“The elder, to the Lady chosen by God and to her children,
whom I love in the truth” (2 Jn 1)
Some believe this Epistle was written to a Church but I would like to take it at face value. The reason why I believe so is that she had children, a home and a sister (vv1,10,13). Not only John, but the entire community of believers loved her. Let’s see why this Ladywas so loveable
The first reason why she was loved by so many was that she was chosen by God. She was a believer who chose to live by the principles of God. Being a believer transforms our life and decorates us with loveable qualities.
The second reason was her dedication to her children. Probably she was a widow, shouldering the entire responsibility of the family. She had transmitted her faith to her children like Eunice (2 Tim 1:5). Even though some of her children were not believers, that didn’t make her any less loveable because they were disciplined children.
Thirdly, she had a beautiful testimony. She had managed her house well, brought up the children as obedient and respectful ones, and had a good reputation with outsiders (1 Tim 3:4-7).
When you love someone, naturally you feel free to advice and warn them. So John took the freedom first to command her to walk in love. It is not just showing love or trying to love. Walking in love means making love our way of life.
Lest she misunderstands His Command, secondly John warns her that there are people whom she should not love. These are the people who deny the incarnation of Christ. Such association would rob her of her basic faith in the truth she had learnt. So John advises her to continue in the truth and not allow the false teachers into her house.
To love is easy but to be loveable you have to really work hard. Never despair but persevere. Love the unloveable people God brings your way. Let your family imbibe your spirit. But beware that you don’t “run ahead” slipping away from the teaching of Christ, embracing false teachers (v9).
Love and be loveable!
