Sunny Woman
Reading: Proverbs 3:5-18
“Clear and bright as the sun” (SS 6:10)
As we study the last aspect of the Sunny Woman, we must remember that the first and foremost aspect of the sun is its clarity and brightness. This teaches women to be sensible in all situations. Let’s see how we can become women with commonsense.
Let’s start with 2 Timothy 1:7. “God has not given us a spirit of fear but of a ... sound mind.” The NKJV uses capital for Spirit. With the aid of the Holy Spirit, our spirit must learn to function with all clarity. Let us not be confused women like Vashti.
It was God’s ultimate plan to give us the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge with its donation of wisdom (Gen 3:6). It is still within our reach. “She (wisdom) is a Tree of Life to those who take hold of her” (Prov 3:18). One sure way of getting wisdom is the Word of God. It makes the simple wise, giving light to the eyes (Psa 19:7,8). It is the honey that Jonathan tasted and his eyes became clear (1 Sam 14:27). When Daniel prayed God sent an angel to give him insight and understanding (Dan 9:22). James advocates prayer for wisdom (1:5). It is the devil who clouds our mind (Mk 5:15). So, as Paul says, “Let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober ... since we belong to the day, let us be sober” (1 Thess 5:6-8).
The Bible advocates propriety for women in all walks of life — whether in dressing up or childbearing (1 Tim 2:9,15). Older women are to teach young women to be discreet (Tit 2:5). This quality of clear thinkingis especially required for women leaders and wives of leaders (1 Tim 3:11). Many women stumble and fall in sin often and quote the grace of God. But “the grace of God ... teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self- controlled (sober), upright and godly lives ...” (Tit 2:11,12).
“With minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at His coming” (1 Pet 1:13). Do you see that grace and sobriety (responsibility) are tied up? This is where the five foolish virgins were totally lost. Peter warns us a second time: “The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray” (1 Pet 4:7); and “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour (1 Pet 5:8). So, “keep your head in all situations” (2 Tim 4:5). Be a Sunny Woman!
