Unsung Heroines
Reading: Acts 21:1-6
“Remember me, O God, for good!” (Neh 13:31)
Paul was on his journey to Jerusalem. His ship touched Tyre and he was quick to locate some disciples there. He stayed there for seven days. The wives happily accommodated him in their homes and gave him hospitality. They did not say goodbye to Paul at their doorsteps and send their husbands to the seashore to send him off. They quickly got their children ready and tugging them along went to see Paul off at the seashore. There they all knelt down at the beach and prayed.
A child would have cried for biscuits; another would have wanted to go to the bathroom. They managed it all. How warm Paul would have felt at this gesture! They are the ones John is speaking of in his third Epistle (vv4-8). These are heroines in my eyes. What more they did for God will be known only in eternity.
Esther and her maids fasted for three days without food or water along with all the Jews in Shushan, including ladies. What gave Esther the courage? What brought down the victory for the Jews from heaven? Heaven will shout the names of these unknown maids.
Innumerable women contributed to the making of the Tabernacle in the wilderness by way of financial contribution and labour. Pharaoh was not willing to let them go but they were released on Moses’ insistence (Ex 10:10,24); they plundered the Egyptians of silver and gold (Ex 11:2); they took the exhausting journey (12:37); they worshiped and danced encouraging the crowds (15:20); they willingly gave away their jewelry, brooches, earrings, rings and ornaments (35:22); they spun (v26), gave their money (v29); they served at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting and as if that was not enough gave away their bronze mirrors.
If you go through the entire Bible, you can underline many such women who played their part well in the Kingdom of God, happy to have their names recorded only in the Lord’s book in heaven though their work lacked the stamp of a genius on earth. So play your part with gusto and you’ll rejoice when you enter the pearly gates and peep into God’s records. You are an unsung heroine!
