Sheep or Goat?
Reading: Matthew 25:31-46
“He will put the sheep on His right and the goats on His left” (Mt 25:33)
If you want to be a sheep, then love the poor —
26. Buy and keep a stock of little toys or things you can give to poor.
27. Stop swapping gifts with the rich and divert the money to the poor.
28. Help build toilets for slum-dwellers.
29. Set apart a tenth of your income and property for the poor.
30. Designate money or property in your will to an institution that cares for the poor.
31. Designate all the coins that come to your hand for the poor.
32. Keep a maximum of ten good dresses and ten ordinary ones for you and give away the rest for the needy.
33. Don’t bargain with poor vendors.
34. If you receive wedding gifts in multiples, give away the extra.
35. Cut the habit of reserving your child’s clothes for the next child.
36. Distribute your old books to the poor.
37. Conduct musical programs in beggars hangouts.
38. Prepare food packets and distribute them in beggars abode.
39. Build huts for the homeless.
40. Repair the collapsing houses of the poor.
41. Visit the helpless. Clean up their home and cook a meal for them.
42. If giving of alms daily disturbs your work, teach them to come first of every month or every first Sunday. Then you can teach, give alms, pray and send them.
43. Lead a simple lifestyle so you can spend for the poor.
44. Conduct games and sports for slum children. Buy shuttle cocks and bats, football, caroom board, chess board, etc. Fix a swing and may be a few other such things for them.
45. If you are a doctor settle down in tribal areas or villages and uplift the people using your knowledge and training.
46. Visit the homes of the poor and be a friend to them. Attend their marriages, funerals and celebration.
47. Take time to patiently listen to their tales of woe.
48. Don’t repair your footwear, bags or old dresses and use them. Repair and give them to the poor for a few months of enjoyment.
49. Stop when you see someone lying on the roadside. If alive help appropriately. If dead notify the municipality for burial.
50. Don’t feel obliged to eat all that guests bring or neighbours send to you. You can share them with the poor to your health!
