“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice” (Phil 4:4)
Women react to personal tragedies very differently. Some take them in their own stride. Others go into depression. Isaiah chapter 54 addresses women without children, women without husbands, the desolate, the deserted, the abused ... More and more women find themselves alone, cold and unwanted in this harsh and cruel world. What is God’s message for them?
First of all He wants you to sing and shout for joy. The above- said chapter is full of promises for you. He tells you not to do one thing — “Do not be afraid ... Do not fear.” Even for a woman, well- settled in life with good support, fear is unshakable. Fear strangles her throat, leading to depression. Whatever may be your circum- stance in life, never let fear get the better of you.
Depressing situations do not last forever. If there was one lady who had every reason to be depressed, it was Mary Magdalene. All the four Gospel writers thought it worth mentioning her in their write-up. She had seven demons in her. Imagine her plight. Jesus cast out all the seven and thenceforth, along with other women who had received a similar healing touch, she was one of Jesus’ troupe (Lk 8:2).
She was following Jesus from Galilee to Golgotha to care for His needs (Mt 27:56,61). When many of the apostles were afraid to be there at the cross, Mary was there. She even went to the burial ground and sat there opposite the tomb for some time. All her hope was gone. What will she do now except cry? But on the third day after burial, at the crack of dawn, she found her way to the tomb. There she started witnessing miracle after miracle till she was completely lifted off her sorrow.
The secret is to keep on living till the depression is past. God will not leave you in the dark for long. There will be problems and trials. But we must learn to rejoice in the Lord and go ahead with life. The Word of God refreshes your soul and gives joy to the heart (Psa 19:7,8). It is literally God speaking to you to encourage you. It is that which refreshed and gladdened Mary Magdalene. Read it and be out of your depression.
