“Then Naomi took the child in her arms and cared for him” (Ruth 4:16)
The status of a grandmother is very grand. She is more than a mother; she is a ‘grand’ mother. Naomi did not think her job was over once she got Ruth married. She involved herself in the bringing up of the child. We are supposed to teach God’s laws to our children and our grandchildren (Dt 4:9). They are not ordinary children, they are ‘grand’ children. That is how faith is transmitted from generation to generation.
I suppose Timothy’s father and grandfather who where Greeks were too busy to spend time with him. His grandmother Lois and mother Eunice who were Jewesses, did not despair of the situation. They invested their time and energy on the little fellow and fed him on a diet of Holy Scriptures from infancy, that one day he became an apostle.
Today’s grandmothers are a busy lot. Many hold a job and others are busy with their social activities. Thank God, there are many grandparents who are a great blessing to their children.
There could be clashes in the way you discipline your grand- children and the way their parents do it. Your dress code may differ from theirs. In such a scenario, grandparents must learn to hold their tongues from crtiticizing their grandchildren’s dress or behaviour. It is primarily the parents’ responsibility. If you cannot agree with the parents then just accept their way of doing things. You should be helpers and not rulers. You are two generations behind. So stop with teaching them Biblical values and praying for them. If your grandchildren grow far away from you, maintain relationship through visits, phone conversations, skype and sending gifts.
Always remember that unless you have a loving relationship with them, you’ll become a nuisance. So, try to spend time with them, entertaining them and cooking their favourite dishes or taking them out. Try to win over their hearts. After that they will be more than willing to listen to you. Busy grandmothers should put down their work when the grandchildren are around. It is worth investing your time and energy on them. Don’t consider them a burden. They are the Obeds and Timothys of tomorrow!
