“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins, and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 Jn 1:8,9)
You have accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour. What happens after that? You don’t become an angel overnight. You are still your same old self. But now you are a child of God belonging to the Kingdom of God. Satan is very unhappy and worried because he has lost one soul from his kingdom. He will try all that is possible to get you back into his fold. The first ploy that he employs is to keep on telling you that it was not a true experience, you just emotionally made a prayer. “You still commit sins,” he says, “and that means, you are my child.” Do not believe this lie and get confused.
On the day you committed your life to Christ, you were born as a baby into the Kingdom of God. It is a one-day process just like physical birth. A baby has all the organs but it cannot walk or talk. Over the years it learns to walk, talk and run. It is a lifetime process. Similarly even though the spiritual experience made you a complete child of God, you are still a spiritual baby. You must gradually grow and mature into a spiritual adult. In this process you may commit sins or entertain doubts about your rebirth. But one certain sign of your rebirth is a sharp conscience. When you commit a sin by chance, you are pricked in your heart. You hate sin. All you have to do is to run to the Throne of Grace and confess your sin and be cleansed. Believe that God has forgiven your sin. Plead for God’s grace and strength to overcome temptation and not to fall into the same sin again.
Two disciplines that are like two wings of a bird are prayer and Bible meditation. Never be slack in these. These will strengthen your faith day by day. Your faith will be assaulted by satan constantly, but it is by faith you live your Christian life to the end. That is why Peter calls our faith “more precious than gold.”
Let come what may, never doubt your experience. Never believe the lies of satan and fall for his tricks. God is on your side. Christian life is a battle. So fight a good fight, finish your race and keep your faith to the end so that you will be crowned (2 Tim 4:7,8).
