“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid” (Psa 27:1)
Fear is a natural protective instinct. None of us can say we have no fear. Sometime or other our hearts tremble. True fear could be a signal in the presence of danger but unwarranted fear is a waste of time and energy. When we perceive danger we are gripped with true fear and try to save ourselves. But unnecessary fear is based on our imagination.
Your basic rule of thumb should be: Panic makes a small fumble worse. So in times of fear our mind should be firing on all cylinders. Never let fear paralyse you. Use your commonsense, plan and proceed to do the right thing in the situation. Even the courageous and bold apostle Paul had his fears. He unabashedly writes to the Corinthian Church about it: “When we came to Macedonia, we had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn — conflicts on the outside, fears within” (2 Cor 7:5). He continues to write “But God ...” Deborah would have experienced the same.
That makes all the difference. In any panicky situation, God is a ready help. “In great fear and distress” Jacob went to meet his murderous brother but God settled the matter amicably (Gen 32:7). If you fear God, you don’t have to fear anyone or anything. The righteous shall be bold as the lion (Prov 28:1). God will put the fear of us in those who frighten us (Dt 11:25). The Israelites quaked in fear at the sight of Goliath. But one brave and righteous kid killed him and put the enemies to flight (1 Sam 17).
Whatever Goliath you may be facing in your life, take heart, the Lord is with you. “I will not fear though tens of thousands assail me on every side,” says David (Psa 3:6). This he sang when he fled from his son Absalom. So in fear he sings, “I will not fear.” This is true humanity. When we are frightened, we tell ourselves, “I will not fear, the Lord is with me.” Just like David won over Absalom, God will bring us out of every fearful situation.
There is no dearth of “Fear not” in the Bible. Read Matthew
10:26-31 and be strengthened.
