“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young,
but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity” (1 Tim 4:12)
Days are changing fast. Today is not like yesterday and tomorrow is not going to be like today. The relationship between boys and girls is no exception. Gone are the days when girls were shy of boys and boys stealing glances at girls. Now they study together, play together, go out together and even sleep or live together. The society does not look at a boy and a girl walking together as something strange. At this stage one cannot say that you cannot be friends with boys. One can only caution them about where to stop.
It is good to meet boys and be friends with them but do not be friendly just with one boy. Do not be hanging around with one particular boy, inviting glances from people. Avoid spending too much time with one boy. Talk only on general subjects like studies, politics, etc. It is better not to share your personal or family problems with the opposite sex. Also avoid talking about delicate matters like affairs and sex. You will then gradually slide into more intimate talks. It is better to be friendly with boys in a group atmosphere where the presence of others have a control over your conversation and behaviour. By all means avoid touching. Once you start talking intimate things and touch each other, you are moving into a different level of friendship. If you want to remain friends, put an end to it. If the boy expresses desire for closer friendship and if you are not for it, gently discourage him and thereafter avoid being with him.
The danger of friendship with boys is that often the boy misunderstands your friendship for an affair. By the time you realize this and try to break free, he is emotionally involved with you and is deeply hurt by your moving away. This results in his anger and attacks of various forms including acid attacks. You must consider young men as friends, with all purity (1 Tim 5:1). So be friendly but maintain a safe distance. Mistakes in this area can damage your life forever. This applies to married women also. “ Co nsi de r wha t I ha v e sa i d, a nd ma y the Lo rd g i v e yo u understanding!” (2 Tim 2:7).
