“If we walk in the light, as God is in the light, we have fellowship with one another,
and the blood of Jesus His Son purifies us from all sin” (1 Jn 1:7)
How do I know what’s going on inside your skull unless you tell me? Many of us make the foolish mistake of expecting the other person to know what we want. “Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air” (1 Cor 14:9). Many times our language is undecipherable. When we get upset, we may go into the silent mode, screw up our face or just grunt and move out, leaving the other person confused.
Let’s say you shut yourself inside your room leaving your parents wondering if you are studying, crying, upset or what. You may be thinking, “How dare they correct me in front of my friend. Let them feel sorry for what they did.” But you have left them in the dark. You think they certainly know. But they have not realized that they have hurt you. Instead what you can do is to take time to cool down. Pray to God that He will help you quench your anger and give you the wisdom to talk to your parents. You can first ask them when they will be really free to listen to you. At that time you can calmly explain to them that correcting you in private will be easy for you to take.
Wives also should not express their anger by silence, throwing things, going out or refusing to answer. First coin the right sentences in your mind. Choose the right time and explain to your husband how hurt you were. He may react violently. But gradually he will understand you. This will make the painful process of understanding shorter.
Some wives are silent in bed wishing the husband wouldn’t be so quick. They lie in the bed staring at the lizard in the ceiling, wondering if that is all they get out of it. They expect their husbands to ‘know.’ How will he know what gives you pleasure unless you openly talk? Don’t be shy in bed. It will dampen your love life. Learn to be expressive and help him please you.
You should also learn to relate to your children, in-laws, neighbours and others in a similar fashion. Gentle, loving and clear expressions are better received and reciprocated than grumpy, unclear messages. Relationships improve when everyone is open and transparent.
