“... he died, for he was an old man, and he was heavy” (1 Sam 4:18)
Do you know why Eli became fat? When his sons took away the best part of people’s offering, to roast it as they pleased, instead of chiding them, Eli was partaker of their sins by enjoying what his sons had cooked (1 Sam 2:29).
If a child is fat, it is not his or her fault, the mother is to be blamed. You must have the basic knowledge about nutrition. Most working mothers buy samosas, cakes, pizzas and sandwitches to escape the burden of slogging in the kitchen. These foods are heavily loaded with fat. To add to that, now children spend more hours in front of the TV or with the mobilephone. So what can you do to have healthy slim children?
The first secret is to cook healthy, tasty dishes. Cook plenty of greens, vegetables, beans, legumes and pulses. Even as a baby if you train them to eat these, as they grow up, they will enjoy them. Twice a week you can cook some tasty non-vegetarian dishes without too much fat or oil. Salads are tasty and nutritious and keep the weight down. Fill the table with fruits, nuts and seasonal products like corn, peanuts, sugarcane, beans, legumes, sundal, etc. Growing children need milk, fish, mutton, chicken, etc. Cook them without much oil. Eating outside often is not healthy as children tend to binge on fatty food. Once a month should be alright to let them off for a funtime as family. Cut down on bakery stuff like chips, biscuits, chocolates and cakes except on occasions. Stop taking sweets in your handbag to hand over to chidren. Instead you can take erazers, pencils or balloons.
Another important aspect of health is exercise. Don’t make them study as soon as they come from school. Let them play some active game. Encourage them to join in games and sports in school. Discourage TV. Instead of buying them computer games, caroom board or word games and videos, get them football, cricket set, skipping, tennicoit ring, shuttle cock set, bicycle and the like.
Keep a watch on their weight. Considering your child’s future, it is better to raise them up the healthy way. Fat cells get fixed early in life and childhood obesity is often irreversible.
Bouquets for you, mother, for you healthy child!
