“Give her the reward she has earned,
and let her works bring her praise at the city gate” (Prov 31:31)
The Proverbial Woman was a housewife, doing her works at home, but a time came when her works started singing her praise. The author of the book counsels us in his next book to do whatever our hand finds to do with all our might, that is, to the best of our ability (Eccl 9:10).
A trend is creeping up among the young generation — a tendency to finish a work, for finishing sake. They are not keen to complete a work as best as they can and look for ways to improve it. They just want the work done, that’s all. It is shoddy, shabby and may be incomplete. The teacher or the professor, or the boss who sees it, wrinkles his forehead and pouts his lips, totallydissatisfied. But there are some who do a work, make it better, then make it best and look for ways to still better it. These are the people God is looking for to entrust His work. These are the trustworthy people in whose hands your projects are safe. These are the people who will not say, “Sorry, I forgot,” or “I didn’t have time.”
When God wanted Moses to build a Tabernacle for Him and gave him the blueprint, Moses instructed the people. God anointed Bezaleel and Oholiab and the workers to do the job. They also themselves took up the responsibility and immersed themselves in the task (Ex 35:30; 36:8). The final verdict: “The Israelites had done all the work just as the Lord had commanded Moses. Moses inspected the work and saw that they had done it just as the Lord had commanded. So Moses blessed them” (Ex 39:43).
“Servants, do what you are told by your earthly masters. And don’t just do the minimum that will get you by. Do your best. Work from the heart for your real Master, for God, confident that you’ll get paid in full when you come into your inheritance. Keep in mind always that the ultimate Master you are serving is Christ. The sullen servant who does shoddy work will be held responsible. Being Christian doesn’t cover up bad work” (Col 3:22-25 The Message Bible).
The world must be able to say, “She’s a Christian. She can be trusted with the job. She will do it perfectly.” Let our works praise us!
