“... well known for her good deeds, such as bringing up children” (1 Tim 5:10)
In the above text “good deeds” is mentioned twice and the first good deed is bringing up children, which is rarely considered so today. I am not against women working outside the home because in the Bible also we read of many working women. And there are women, who unless they work, cannot run the family. But I am certainly against the concept that every woman should find a career. God gave one trouble for the woman, but today she wants to take up the trouble given to man also. Consider the following —
Health problems are more when both parents work. Children throw fits, have apnoec attacks, vomiting, etc, all emotional. Physically, due to frequent hotel foods, lack of tasty food, old food stuffed in the fridge, lack of balanced diet, etc, the family suffers. There is no playtime or funtime at home. The supposed to be Happy Home is rarely happy. Parents snap at children and at each other. They only criticize and correct with no time for relaxed chats, appreciation, open expression of love and discovering their talents. Children feel lonely and isolated as parents are busy getting ready for the next day ordeal, especially because they are not growing up with their cousins nearby, as it used to be.
Today’s children are getting their values from television and servants. Mother has no time to sing lullaby, tell stories or teach the Bible. Many keep their parents or in-laws at home and treat them as dignified servants. Some elders do it happily while others feel stressed out. At a time when they’d like to retire and relax they are retreaded. There is less sex and more TV or laptop. Pregnancy, childbirth, bringing up children and relaxing with the husband are no more the joy that used to be but become a burdensome duty, since career mania gripped men and women. Looking after yourself, your husband and home is a fulltime job. Moreover the worst casualty of working women is unhurried personal devotion and “good deeds.” Sometimes there are old parents or in-laws at home like Mrs. Peter’s mother who need care.
May be you can take up a lighter job or work from home. Weigh the options and decide intelligently.
