“Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.
For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head
of the Church, His body, of which He is the Saviour” (Eph 5:22-24)
When I talk to young girls about the reality of married life, many tell me, “I will make him cook, I will slap my husband, I will be my own person, I will not obey him,” etc, etc. If you have such an attitude, I want to tell you now iteself, that your marriage is not going to work. Married life is a garden if you water and nurture. It is a jungle if you uproot and plunder.
It will be good for you to go for premarital counselling. Even before you enter married life, set you expectations right. You will be disappointed if you expect it to be a bed of roses. It will be, sure, but there will be some thorns also. You both come from different families and different background. So you may clash on almost everything. He will think like a man and you will think like a woman. Even at the start you must decide never, never to leave your husband but live with him till death. That commitment will keep you going through rain and sunshine.
With a little give and take you can make your marriage work. You can read some good books too. The first thing you must learn is to respect your husband like Sarah (1 Pet 1:5). Don’t expect perfection in him and be disappointed. Respect him as he is. Love is the foundation, superstructure and roof of a home. Whether you get love or not keep giving love all the time.
You must learn cooking before your marriage. Books can help you develop your cooking skill but the basics must be learnt earlier. You must decide not to run to your parents for everything unless it is a serious issue. The lion’s share of running the home and raising the children will be yours.
Be if far from you, but if there is physical abuse, or physical or mental torture, never think of ending your life like Rachel (Gen
30:1). There is help available. There is your Church, spiritual elders, organisations and others who can guide you as to what to do. More than anything God cares for you and will never desert you.
Best wishes for a happy married life!
