Smile, please!

Reading: Psalm 133

“Rejoice always!” (1 Thess  5:16)

For  some  the  only time they  smile  probably is when  they  look at  the mirror. Well,  that teaches us  a  lesson. We are  prettiest when  we smile!  In this busy  world,  people  forget to smile.  Their mind is too preoccupied to smile. Our physical weakness and stress also  draws a sad  mask over our  face.  “If I say,  ‘I will forget my complaint,’ I will put  off my sad  face and wear  a smile,” says  Job (Job 9:27). Can we forget our complaints? I have  a friend who has too many  problems to enumerate. But her  doctor one day said,  “I have  not seen  anyone so  happy   who  has  so  many   ailments.” She is for me a Queen  of Smiles. She is a living  miracle smiling all the time like  the virtuous woman  of Proverbs 31 (v25).

Even  though for some  it is natural to have a smiley  face, we all can  practice a smile  all the  time.  In this sad  world  we can  bring joy,  hope and  cheer to those around us  only if we learn to smile. “A cheerful look  brings joy to  the heart,” says  Proverbs 15:30. Just try smiling at people and you will know what magic  it works for both  of you.

Smile  heals wounds and  refreshes a soul.  It generates love. It starts a relationship. It gives  people  confidence in you. This  sick world  is badly  in need  of people  who can  smile. It is the cheapest and  costliest gift  you can give someone. It not  only changes your chemistry but  also  the  one  who  receives it.  It  can  be  a point of contact with  the  one to whom  you wish  to share the  Good News.

People  are  longing for love and  your  smile  gives  them a bit of your love. Of course, I don’t need to tell you that you need discretion too. Let smile  become your second nature. Try to lift up the spirits of those who  are  sinking in  sorrow. Smile  is  often  contagious. Your smile  can light up many  candles in this world.  Smile at your co-passengers, coworkers, beggars. But first of all learn to smile at your  own family  members. And that is where we start! Smile  is soundless music. Sing  it all the  time.  It relaxes you and  others.

“The  most beautiful thing you can  give  another human being is a genuine smile. Live  your life by this motto and  you will  see wonderful results.” — A grandmother
