“Love ... yourself” (Mt 22:38)
Love yourself, is the next lesson, to learn today. Jesus taught us to love ourselves. Unless we love ourselves, we cannot love others like ourselves. So the great commandment starts with loving o ursel ves. Espec i al ly when we bec ome teenag ers we hate ourselves. We don’t like the shape of our nose or skin colour. We are obsessed with our weight and constantly wish we were a little taller or a little more intelligent or had thicker hair. The worst thing you can do to yourself is not to love yourself.
David sings in Psalm 139 how marvellously and breathtakingly he was formed in his mother’s womb. God deliberately chose your looks, designed your lips and shaped your face. He did not make a mistake. This is how He wanted you. So be happy for the way you are. It is easy to go into depression when you make mistakes or fail in some area of life. Learn to forgive yourself. After all you are not the only person on earth to fail. Recover quickly and go ahead with life with the lesson that failure taught you.
Accept yourself. This is how you are and this is how you are going to be. Wherever you can improve yourself, make an effort to do. But unless you accept the way God has created you, you are going to be an unhappy person. So rejoice in the way you are.
Appreciate yourself constantly, like the Shulamite, which will give you a boost (SS 1:5). Do not brush aside your small victories and pats people give you. Concentrate on your positives and downplay your negatives. Celebrate your wins.
Never compare yourself with others and feel sorry for yourself. You are unique. No other person is like you, was like you or going to be like you. Comparison leads you nowhere and leaves a deep pit in your soul. If you are like somebody, God cannot use you for the purposes for which He designed you.
The way you love yourself should not be based on other’s opinion. People may flatter you, or put you down. That should not elate you or depress you. You must have an opinion about yourself and you must stand on that.
Start loving yourself early and you will enjoy sunshine all your life. Look into the mirror and say, “I love you and accept you the way you are,” and start putting it into practice.
