Reading: Ruth 4:13-22
“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer” (Rom 12:12)
Today we will see one more lesson we learn too late —
Life is better in the latter years. For girls life is a maze of confusion. Decision-making is hard. After marriage they find that it is not at all what they dreamed about or wanted. They are shocked and saddened at the sudden turn of events. Some decide on separation and others contemplate suicide. I want to assure them that it is not the end of everything. Something better is coming up. Eve was certainly disappointed at the early years of her life; but if she had lived to see Abraham, David and Jesus, she would have died praising God for her life.
Storms blew in Naomi’s life. She was bitter at the way God was dealing with her. But she never gave up on life. Every day she lived with a hope to see sunshine. Finally she saw the day and breathed her last with laughter in her soul.
Never give up on life. It is a gift of God. Situations may be threatening. In all the black clouds of life there is a silver lining. God is not interested in giving you a comfortable, happy life. He is interested in moulding you into His image. That is not a cakewalk. It is a furnace experience. It is a sandpaper rub. But when you come out polished, in the image of Christ, you will praise God forever. So dig in your heels. Life is going to be better for you.
In the early years we are novices, immature; but as we grow up we become knowledgeable and mature. We are better able to understand people and circumstances. We tackle problems expertly and guide or counsel others too. We look back and think why we cried for such silly things. Life grows sweeter and sweeter and you start actually enjoying life.
Like Elizabeth and Zachariah who dandled a baby on their knees in their old age, many things we longed for in younger days, become tantalizingly close in midlife and become reality in old age. So keep at it, keep working on yourself. Life is an university in which you keep on learning and improving yourself. Your tears will be replaced by joy. Of course, there will be things that still will not be to your taste; but by now you have learned that acceptance is peace — the peace that passes understanding.
You’ll be surprised when you turn back and see your life, and say, “Praise the Lord for the Golden Sunset!”
