Reading: 1 Timothy 6:11-19
“Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature:
... greed, which is idolatry” (Col 3:5)
“They gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears, and Jacob buried them” (Gen 35:4). Jacob was a Jehovah worshiper but his family was not fully dedicated to God. On his journey he wanted to purify his family. So they all surrendered the gods they had with them. It must have been difficult for the womenfolk to give up their earrings on which probably were the image of their gods. Obedient to Jacob, they gave up their earrings to be buried, so Jacob could build an altar for God in Bethel.
Women have many idols. For some it is saris or salwars. They keep on buying whether they need them or not. Any new fashion comes, they like to update their wardrobes. For some it is jewellery. Many who do not wear jewellery have a stock of jewels in their bank closets. Others go on shopping spree. They don’t stop to consider the prize or their need. If they want it, they must have it. Vessels are a weakness for housewives. Though they have enough, they buy some more.
Nowadays their jobs and education are becoming idols for many career women. Everybody wants to do Ph.D. and everybody wants a career. Though I don’t decry these, I feel we should know God’s mind before choosing a course or career. Food is becoming more and more a popular god these days. We want to visit every new restaurant and taste every exotic dish. Remember the poor and mind your health. There is a gastronomic revolution around the globe and we should not succumb to it. Your idol could very well be vain talk. A friend or neighbour starts the juicy topic and off you go, only to feel sorry for the gossip, when night falls. You give in to the temptation again and again and label it as a weakness.
There are so many other idols which you may be worshiping, which you alone will know. In your life’s journey unless you stop now and then to bury your precious idols you cannot build altars for God. Many women who ought to have become spiritual giants are today pygmies because they continue to worship their idols.
Take time to search yourself. Ask God to put His finger on your idol. Pray that the Holy Spirit will throw His torchlight and show you where your problem lies. If like Rachel you have some hidden idols, bury it today and proceed that God may bless you.
