Reading: Genesis 34:1-4
“Discretion will protect you, and understanding guard you” (Prov 2:11)
“Shechem ... saw her, he took her and raped her ... and spoke tenderly to her” (Gen 34:2,3). Note here first of all that Shechem was an idol worshiper but Dinah was brought up to believe in the true God. Secondly it concerned only physical beauty. They were total strangers, guided not by principles but by their hormones.
This is how a girl falls in the pit. First of all, girls nowadays choose their friends indiscriminately. It is not wrong to be friends with unbelievers but you should know how far you can go with them. Especial ly with boys you sho uld never ha ve a clo se relationship. Dinah fell for his tender words. Many boys will speak lovingly to you and make big promises. Be cautious. Many girls get trapped by honey dripping words. Especially if your home situation is not good, you tend to believe that the boy will take you to a magic world. Keep your emotions under control. Do not make rash promises or give your photo or send emails. Even if the friend is a Christian and believer, maintain your distance. Don’t be naive like Tamar (2 Sam 13). Learn self-defence like Karate. If you sense danger, run to a place where there is a crowd.
Dinah went with Shechem like a snake that goes after a charmer. She did not realize the consequences of going alone with a man, who cannot control his emotions. She succumbed to his charms and got raped, I guess, with her consent. Yes, she knew the living God, but did not go by His priciples. Her father waited for seven years to have intimacy with the girl he was in love with (Gen 29:21). But the next generation could not wait.
Girls must be a little suspicious and alert in their movement with boys and men. Girls have been raped when help was available nearby. You must not let fear paralyse you. Shout and scream and get help. Don’t let anybody threaten you into a relationship. Inform your parents or a reliable person (Dt 22:24-27). If you are suspicious about anybody, it is better to inform a senior person. Forewarned is being forearmed. Avoid lonely places and being alone with a boy or a man. Don’t flirt and then throw the blame on the man.
If you were raped or abused, remember, he had your body, not your will. Go to a hospital immediately so you would have evidence in case you go to the law. Put the bitter experience behind your back and go ahead with your life with God’s grace. (Suicide counselling:
