Reading: 1 Samuel 25:1-11
“She was an intelligent and beautiful woman,
but her husband was surly and mean in his dealings” (1 Sam 25:3)
Abigail, the lovely and bright woman, was unequally yoked with a brute of a man. Life was miserable for her. They were operating on different wavelengths. To add to her woes, he was a drunkard. Anybody would have advised her a divorce. But that was not her option. She decided to bloom as a lovely lotus where God had kept her — in a dirty pond!
Once, while travelling, I saw a nasty pond covered with beautiful purple hyacinths. We stopped the car and gathered some of the plants. I put them in our garden. But sadly, day by day the colour drained from the flowers gradually until finally they all died. Only then I understood that the plants needed dirty water to bloom in all their colours.
May be you are lamenting about your situation. Your father may drink or your parents may be constantly fighting or your siblings may be making life miserable for you as you hobble along in your spiritual journey. Your husband may be an uncaring person with whom you may not be able to have fellowship or friendship at any level. To be a good wife in spite of the husband’s character is the most daunting of the wife’s calling. May be your in-laws are giving you hell of a time. Your neighbours or workspot may make you desire death. You children may be hostile. Despair not. Be assured that God has kept you in this place not by mistake but purposely to bring out your beautiful colours which is not possible in a clean atmosphere. This is where you learn to be patient, to forgive, to love your enemies and bless those who curse you. More than anything this is where you learn to throw yourself in God’s arms in total abandon.
No, God has not made a mistake. He wants to develop your spiritual beauty and make you an useful vessel for His Kingdom. Esther the orphan had to accept the turn of events in her life, before God could use her. Naomi had to go through crushing experiences that the fragrance of her life delighted others. Mary suffered a humiliating experience to bring forth the Saviour of the world. Wipe your tears. God is making you, teaching you, moulding you so that you may send forth your fragrance to the world.
